Bible
This Bible was published in 1853 (Click here to see the cover page). It appears to have first belonged to Russel Bodine, the son of Abraham Bodine and Barbara Cruze; however, that is only an educated guess. Russel would have been about 24 at that time. His first child, Charles Hawley Bodine, was born on January 15, 1853. He may have bought the Bible at that time or he was given it as a gift. Russel Bodine was the only child of Abraham Bodine and his second wife, Barbara Cruze. The info in the Bible follows the family of Charles Hawley Bodine, Russel's son. This Bible may have been with Abraham and Barbara Bodine for a time since family tradition says that they (or just Barbara) ended up raising Charles after Russel's death.
Abraham Bodine was born on August 24, 1779 near Readington, New Jersey. He was the oldest son of Cornelius Bodine and Margaret Sutphen. Barbara was born on September 23, 1797. Both Abraham and Barbara appear to have died in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania and are buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Hughesville. The information and images from this Bible were sent to me by Robert B. Reuther whose mother recently (beginning of 2001) discovered it in her attic.
Robert wrote this about the Bible: Although I don't pretend to be a handwriting expert, the first page of births appears to be written in the same hand and at the same time. The second page of births was also recorded at the same time, but in a different hand and probably at a later date. They were originally written in pencil and later recorded over in pen. The page of deaths appears to be written in two hands. The first three deaths appear to be written in the same hand as the first page of births. The last death, Barbara Bodine, appears to be written later and possibly in another hand, possibly the same hand that recorded the second page of births. Also, interestingly, Mercy P. Bodine's death date is recorded "above" the first line -- in order to keep it in chronological order?
