He met his wife when she was twelve. They later moved to Warren, Pennsylvania in about 1904. John Pratt went to work security for the refinery and later for the police dept were he became Chief of police. Was also the first garbage collector in Warren owned City Disposial.They Had 9 Children 3 girls and 6 boys.

Funeral services in memory of John P. Berdine, who passed away at his home, 114 Frank street, yesterday following a long illness, will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock from the home with the Rev. J. A. Davidson, pastor of the First Baptist church officiating. Interment will be in Oakland cemetery with officers of Warren Lodge of Elks in charge of services at the grave. Mr. Berdine was born August 11, 1871, in Spotsylvania, Va., coming to Warren 38 years ago. He was first employed by the former Wilburine Oil Works. Later he became a member of the Warren police force, serving as chief of police for six of his ten years in the department. He was then county detective for four years. In 1914 he purchased the City Disposal Company, which he operated until 1934. In November, 1935, he was elected sheriff of Warren county and held that position from 1936 to January 1, this year, when he retired. He was a member of the First Baptist church and of Warren Lodge No. 223, B. P. O. Elks. Besides his wife, he is survived by the following children: Ernest Berdine, John Berdine, Jr., Mrs. Lurania Kehrli, Ted Berdine and Mrs. June Hinton, of Warren, and Julius Berdine, of Erie. He also leaves 18 grandchildren and one brother, H. O. Berdine, of Binghamton, N. Y. Three children, Frank, Ray and Julia Berdine, preceded him in death.
