Notes for: Elsworth Berdine

In the 1910 census Elsworth and Martha Berdine had been married 13 years. They were the parents of seven with six living. They rented 10 acres and he could read and write, she could not. They lived on the Freeport and Garrison Rd. His father and mother were born in West Virginia and hers in Pennsylvania. All of their children were born in Pennsylvania. Elsworth's notice of death was reported on the front page of the Democrat Messenger on April 24, 1937.



NEW FREEPORT MAN KILLED IN GUN ACCIDENT. BODY OF ELSWORTH BERDINE IS FOUND BY BOYS LYING (sic) IN A DRAIN. VICTIM KILLED SELF ACCIDENTLY, WAS FATHER OF SEVEN.



"The lifeless body of Elsworth Berdine, aged 68 years was found shortly after 12:00 noon yesterday lying in a drain alon the road near the village with a gaping shot gun wound in the left side believed to have been inflicted accidently as he crawled thru a hole in the fence enroute home from ground houg hunting. The entire charge of the gun struck Mr. Berdine, as the mussle (sic) of the left arm was torn away and a large hole made in his side just ove the heart. There were also powder burns foundon the left hand. Mr. Berdine is survived by seven children:
Russell, Patrick, William, Hiram, and Paul of New Freeport. Joseph of Hundred, West Virginia, and Mrs. Elizabeth McNeely of Brave. Two brothers, Benson Berdine of Pine Grove, West Virginia and William Berdine of Hundred, West Virginia, and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Poland also of Hundred. Burial in Hoskinson Cemetery."
