Notes for: Clark Vincent Berdine

I had his birth date as Nov. 25, 1876, but that seems to be in some doubt now. It does look like he was born in 1876, though.

I found the Berdine family of Porter County Indiana on your website. The name Clark V. Berdine is listed and his wife is given as Maggie "Walter." This is an error I have seen before. Her name was "Maggie Walters" with an "s." She was born 25 November 1876 and died 4 December 1839 in Boone Township, Porter County, Indiana. Her father was John Wesley Walters (27 May 1831 -29 July 1903) and her mother was Maria C. Mock (2 Feb. 1834 - 1 March 1888). Both Clark and Maggie are buried in Hebron Cemetery, Porter County; John Wesley Walters and his wife Maria are buried a few miles away at Cornell Cemetery, Porter County.
I acn take the Walters line back one more generation.

Bonnie,

You are right Thanks for checking. I double checked Clark's obituary, but no birth date is given. He died 15 Feb. 1941. I also copied his age from the death notice which says Hebron Man dies at age 55; this is also wrong. Every census lists his age as the same as Maggie. It is hard to believe that someone who had lived in the same place for most of his life could fib about his age. Perhaps listing his age as 55 was one of those jokes people country people enjoyed. Or maybe it was just a typo. He was, in fact 65 (or close because I do not know his birthday).

This error has an odd consequence. Porter county has a very good online genealogy site. One of the things featured is a list of cemeteries. It is free to all, but you have to type in Hebron Cem. Here Clark's dates are given as 1886-1940. If you click on Clark's name it gives the full text of the Death Notice mentioned above. It noted they did not actually find a stone for Clark, but relied on the death notice. Now, the death notice they have posted says 1941, but someone has mistakenly typed in "1940." on the dates for Clark. They have also accepted the false figure of 55 years and have come up with dates of 1886 - 1940. In fact, his dates should be 1876-1941.

Other Berdine facts: Since my last e-Mail I have learned that Vernon Berdine was selected by the County Superintendent of Schools as one of two students to get scholarships to Indiana University. I have also found a notice from 1 November 1939 saying that Mr. and Mrs Blake Berdine have moved into his parents home so they could care for his ailing mother.
