In 1850, Susan Owsley was head of the family living in Lewis County while her husband had joined the rush to the California gold fields with his cousin William Henry Owsley. Living with her was her step-mother, Frances. In 1870 and 1880, the family was living in Canton, Lewis County and in 1900, Susan Owsley, now a widow, was living in Dickerson Township, Lewis County, Missouri. In his newspaper obituary, it was said that 8 of his 9 surviving children were present at his funeral. His son Henry was "in the distant South." He was involved in merchandising in Tully and Canton for 40 years, except for a "short adventure in California in the gold mines" and railroading in Texas. (Palmyra newspaper, 10 Sept 1891.)
