Notes for: Winnie Isabella Bodine

I originally had a birth date of Jan 1848 for her. However, Winnie's daughter, Mary Louisa (English) Phillips, wrote up the story of her own life and that "journal" has been passed down to the family. It includes some genealogical information with names, dates, and places. Mary gives her mother's birth date as February 3, 1849.

he journal has other information about her family and that of her mother, Winnie. She says that in 1875 they were living in Trinity County, Texas, near Lovelady. She said her mother's family "J. D. Bodine" lived in "Nacadocious County near Douglas." (I'm not sure who this J. D. Bodine was.)

In 1877, they moved to Nacogdoches to live with Winnie's parents. Winnie's mother caught "the fever" that year and died late in the summer of 1878. Her mother had a black woman (Negro free slave) who lived close by. She used to come everyday and wash and clean the house. Sometimes she would take the children home with her and keep them all day. The children loved her and called her "Aunt." In 1879, Winnie and family moved back to Trinity County. Winnie and husband later moved to near Stockdale and then on to Floresville. There she ran a restaurant that was right in front of the depot.

These were the some of the events mentioned in Mary Phillips' journal concerning Winnie (Bodine) English.

Winnie (or Isabella) was shown on the Orange County Census of 1860 as age 11. Isabella was also found on the 1880 Trinity County, Texas Census, but neither she nor her husband were found on the 1900 Census.

This is another instance of first cousins having the same name, since there was also a Winnie in the family of OHP, one of the brothers of William R. Bodine.

You have a wonderful genealogy site. And I have frequently referred to it.

We went to Wilson Co. Fairview cemetery last year. Winnie I. Bodine English Burrow is buried there. I went on line at Ancestery 1900 census and found Winnie and 3 of her children living with H William Burrow. The census stated they had been married 8 years. That would put theThomas English death date wrong unless they divorced. Of course I have found mistakes in the census from time to time. But mostly in the spelling.

I was just wondering if you had heard anything about Thomas English death date or if there was a divorce. I appreciate your time, Thanks WP

Subject: [BODINE] Thomas B. English and Winnie Isabell Bodine.....Texas

Several years ago I began to wonder about the death date of Thomas Bennett English , and the 2nd marriage of his wife Winnie Isabell Bodine. The dates didn't jive. One weekend my daughter from San Antonio came for a visit and brought a pamplet from Wilson co. It had lots of info about the county. The cemeteries and churchs. One thing it mentioned was that there had been 5 divorces in the 1800's. I just knew that one of those divorces had to be my English /Bodine line. I didn't have a chance to go to Wilson co. untill November 2007. I found the divorce decree and the marriage record for Isabell Bodine English to W.H. Burrow in 1893. The people at both the library and the courthouse were very nice and helpful. It was quite a find. But the records did not explain why there was a divorce. That I may never know. Now I think I'll go to Cherokee co and check out a possible 2nd marriage for Thomas B. English.

Is anyone else interested in this line. I would be glad to share both the divorce decree and the marriage license... I would be interested in any info concerning this family.

Here is the info from the divorce decree that Wanda found:

Decree of Divorce with Custody of Children.
Date: December 07, 1893 Floresville, Wilson Co.,Texas.

Plaintif: W. I. English
Defendant: T. B. English

Defendant was a no-show. Divorce and custody of minor children were given to Plaintif. Ages of children: 18, 8 and 5 years old. Names of the children were listed as: Mandy E. English, Lela English, and Rufus English. (Wanda says these dates fit Nancy, Ada, and Rufus). The original was difficult to read. T.B. English was ordered to pay court costs.

From Ronny Bodine:

In 1870-1880, Thomas and Isabella English were living in Trinity County, Texas engaged in farming. Thomas and Winnie English were divorced 7 Dec 1893 in Floresville, Wilson County,Texas. In 1900, Thomas English reported he was a widower, living in Cherokee County, and boarding with Richard and Susan McKnight.
