Notes for: John C. Milligan

From Find-A-Grave:

On November 16, 1820 Ralls county was organized. The land that would become Monroe county lay within its boundaries. John C. Milligan and a negro slave came to Middle grove from Virginia by horseback in that year. He built a combination trading post, tavern, and house on the crest of the hill on the north side of Main Street. It was built for the purpose of trading with the indians who were still in the area. It was a fine endeavor, and many believe this to be the first structure built in Monroe County. His name is still borne by Milligan Creek which flows through Middle Grove.

On October 20, 1834 John Milligan was sitting by his fireplace holding one of his daughters on his lap. A bolt of lightning struck the chimney, ran down and instantly killed him. The daughter was unconscious. A slave picked her up, ran outside in the rain and held her face up until she was revived. (written by Mildred McManama Schopp)
