PRAIRIE CITY - Funeral services for Ralph Arie Vander Waal, 86, a resident of the Prairie City community since a child, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the Prairie City Christian Reformed Church.
The Rev. Sheldon Starkenberg, pastor of the church, will conduct services.
Burial will be in Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City.
Friends may call at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City today and visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials to Bethany Christian Services will be accepted.
Mr. Vander Waal died Sunday at the Clearview Manor in Prairie city.
Survivors are his wife, Jennie; four daughters, Ruth Vander Waal of Prairie City, Kathryn Vander Waal of Bradenton, Fla., Ellen (Mrs. Duane) Van Wyk of Mitchellville and Marilyn (Mrs. Dan) Stravers of Prairie City; five grandchildren; and a brother, William of New Sharon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and five sisters.
Mr. Vander Waal was a member of the Prairie City Christian reformed Church and a member of the Prairie City Christian Grade School board.
He farmed in the Prairie City area until his retirement in 1980 and later drove a Prairie City Christian Grade School Bus.
The son of Gerrit and Flora Kuiper Vander Waal, he was born Aug. 30, 1907 in New Sharon.
He was married to Jennie Snetselaar Feb. 1, 1938 in Prairie City. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 1993
