Notes for: Jacob Bodine
In the settlement of Jacob's estate, the names of his wife and children are not mentioned, except a Jacob Bodine. This Jacob was given 100 lbs. This must refer to his father, Jacob Bodine, since his son, Jacob, would have only been an infant (as well as his other son, Nicholas).
There are some documents related to the inventory of his estate that are itemized below. These can be found in Morris County, NJ Wills 21 N, 208 and following. His wife and children are mentioned in these documents.
Item 1: This is the bond of Jacob Bodine, Jr., the son of J. Jacob Bodine. Catherine would be his widow; John would be Jacob Jr.'s brother; and Nicholas Shipman may have been Catherine's brother or other relative. The date is May 23, 1748. Most of it is a printed form with blanks left for names and other personal information. See "NJ Archives, First Series," v. 30, Abstracts of Wills 1730-1750, v. 2, page 50.
KNOW ALL MEN by these Presents, That We Catherine Bodine of Hunterdon County and John Bodine and Nicholas Shipman both of the same County Yeomen are held and firmly bound unto His Excellency Jonathan Belcher Esq'r. Capt. General & Governor-in-chief of Jew jersey in the sum of 400 pounds, Proclamation Money, to be paid to the said Jonathan Belcher Esq'r. his Successors or Assigns: To which Payment well and truly to be made; We bind us, our Heirs, Executors and Administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these Presents. Sealed with our Seals and Dated the twenty third Day of May Anno Domini One thousand Seven Hundred and forty eight.
THE CONDITION of the above Obligation is such, That if the Above-bound Catherine Bodine widow & Administrator of all and singular the Goods, Chattels and Credits of Jacob Bodine, late of Hunterdon County Yeoman deceased, do make or cause to be made, a true and perfect Inventory of all and singular Goods, Chattels and Credits of the said Deceased, which have or shall come to the Hands, Possession or Knowledge of the said Catherine Bodine or into the Hands of any other Person or Persons for her(?) Use, and the same so made, exhibit or cause to be exhibited into the Registry of the Prerogative Court, in the Secretary's-Office at Perth Amboy on or before the twenty third Day of August next ensuing; and the same Goods, Chattels and Credits of the said Deceased, at the Time of his Death, or which at any Time after, shall come to the Hands or Possession of the said Catherine Bodine, or unto the Hands or Possession of any other person or Persons, for her(?) Use, do well and truly administer according to Law; and farther do make or cause to be made, a just and true Account of her Administration, the Date hereof; and all the Rest and Residue of the said goods, chattels and Credits; which shall be found remaining upon the Account of the said Administrator the same being first examined and allowed of, by the Judge, for the time being, of the said Prerogative Court, shall deliver and pay unto such Person or Persons respectively, as the said Judge for the time being, of the said Court, by his Decree or Sentence, pursuant to the true Intent and Meaning of an Act of Parliament, made in the 22nd and 23rd Years of the Reign of King Charles II, entitled An Act of Settling Intestates Estates (estates without wills), shall limit and appoint. And if it shall hereafter appear, that any last Will and Testament was made by the said Deceased, and the Executor or Executors therein named, do exhibit the same into the said Prerogative Court, making Request to have it allowed and approved accordingly; If the said Catherine Bodine being thereunto required do render and deliver up the said Letters of Administration, Approbation of such Testament being first had and made in the said Court, then the above Obligation to be void, or else it shall stand in full Force and Virtue.

These look like real signatures. The one by Nicholas Shipman looks like a young boy wrote it or someone who could not write very well.
Item 2: This part is completely handwritten.
Be it Rem'd that at Perth amboy on the Day ... within named? Catherine Bodine personally came before me, Thomas Bartow duly authorized to qualify Administrators and she being duly sworn on the holy Evangelists doth depose that her late husband Jacob Bodine Jun'r. the Deceased within named Dyed without a will as far as she knows and as she believes and that she will well and truly Administer all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said Deceased which have or shall come to her hands or possession or to his? hands or possession of any other Person or Persons for her use and that she will Exhibit a true and perfect Inventory of S'd Goods Chattels and Credits and render a just and true account of her Administration.

There is a note in the margin that says "Catherine Bodine Admin of Jacob Bodine Jun'r 23 May 1748 Hunterdon 208J. This was probably added by some archiver.
Item 3: This comes from Abstracts of Wills made by the WPA at Richmondtown, Staten Island. It is the inventory of Jacob Bodine, Jun'r of Hunterdon County. (The "Jun'r" may not appear in the original, but this would be his inventory.) At the beginning of the abstract, the date was copied as February 22, 1748, but this would be incorrect. The date is, however, given correctly at the end of the abstract as February 22, 1749. Bond was made on May 23, 1748, the year that Jacob died. The inventory included 105 bushels of wheat and was valued at 118.7.9 pounds. The appraisors were John Handershot and Jacob Shipman. See also volume 9 of the N.J. Item 4: The date for this is April 3, 1754. It is Jacob Bodine's Inventory of Hunterdon and Morris Counties (Book 65, 8.8). This was signed by Jacob Hendershot, Jacob Shipman, and Roelef Roelofson. On the same day an accounting was given of cash paid to 26 individuals among whom were Cornelius Bodine, Jacob's brother (14th name on the list), Roelef Roelofson, Frederick Shipman, and John Hendershot. The others were Michael Hilabrant, Andrios Killian,, John Haneshot, Johanes Sharp, John Budd, John Haman, Burbra Curts, Peter Cramer, Michael Deller, Thomas Neal, Andrios A. Mark, Peter Van Nest, Dortier (Doctor?) Spitsor, Brice Riky, Abram Dewit, John Evans, John Vandewater, John Ricky, Sarah Budd, Daniel Vanwagner, and William Winn.
Item 5: This is the settlement of the personal estate of Nicholas and Jacob Bodine, identified as the children of Jacob Bodine, Jr., late of Lebanon. They are now the wards of Cornelius Bodine of Hunterdon. The date for this is June 18th, 1754, about six weeks after the inventory. Witnesses were Brice Riky and R. Smith.
An interesting quote from this document is this, "All accounts relating to the estate (of young Nicholas and Jacob) came into the hands of Rullif Rolefson of Morris County by his marrying Cathern, late widow of the above said Jacob Bodine, deceased." Other legal documents (What are they?) do show that Rullif R. did marry Catherine, the widow of Jacob, Jr.
His will may be mentioned in Henry Jones' book on New York Palatine Germans. I think it's a will for a Jacob Bodine who died in 1742.

I'm looking through all my stuff. I have an article from the New Jersey Colonial Documents, page 50 that has (It must be a will):
1747-8 Feb 22. Bodine, Jacob, Jr of Hunterdon Co. Inventory includes 105 bushels of wheat. Appraisers John Hendershot, Jacob Shipman.
1748, May 23. Bond of Catherine Bodine, widow, administratrix: John Bodine and Nicholas Shipman, fellow bondsman.

"The deceased dyed possed of a tract of land of one hundred eighty-three acres held by Lease from John Budd, Esq and Sarah, his wife, for the term of ninety-seven years, to comence from the first Day of November in the year of 1746 at the yearly rent of three Spanish pistoles and a half and four shillings and seven pence currant money of American (signed Cathrin Bodine.)

Son, Jacob 500 including 128 already paid him. To children of son, Isaac, dec'd i.e., Elizabeth, Jacob, Johmn, Michael and Isaac, each 100. Daughter, Elizabeth Kline, 225 and after her decease to be divided among her children begotten by Jermiah Hess. Daughter, Mary Minegar, 225 including 100 paid her. Daughter, Catharine Thomas 225; including 150 paid her. Daughter, Charity Albertson, 225 inclduing 109 paid her. Daughter, Rebeckah Hendershoto 225; also i cow, bed and bedding and a chest. Daughter, Anna Roseberry 225. Daughter, Leah Hendershott 225. Real and personal to be sold. Granddaughter, Sarah Gardner, bed and bedding, Residue to be divided between the children or their heirs.
I have more stuff. I see in my family tree that my ggggggrandfather, Mathias Shipman and Margaret Sharpenstein had a child, Sarah who married Isaac Hendershott whose father was John George Hendershot and whose mother was Catherine Bodine.
So, all of the above may be related or not!!! But anyhow, I knew I had seen the name Bodine in my family tree of the Shimans.
