Mercer County Businessman and Community Leader W. A. 'Pete' Wickliffe Dies, at age 70 Mr. William A. 'Pete' Wickliffe, 70, of 506 Ashley Camp Rd., died Friday January 22, at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. Born September 24 1922 in Greenville, he was the son of the late John Edwin and Christine Oates Wickliffe and the husband of Jo Etta Wickliffe. He was an attorney and a self-employed businessman. Mr. Wickliffe attended Vanderbilt University and Manhattan College of New York and earned his law degree from the University of Kentucky. He was the Harrodsburg City Attorney from 1950 to 1951. He was a State Representative from 1952 to 1953 and a State Senator from 1954 to 1958. He was the Outstanding Young Man of Kentucky in 1954, Commonwealth Attorney for the 13th Judicial District 1958 to 1970, and was Special Judge for the 50th District from 1970 to 1976. He was a member of the Harrodsburg United Presbyterian Church, where he was active in the choir for a number of years. He was a member of the American Red Cross and was a member and past president and secretary/treasurer for the Harrodsburg Tobacco Board of Trade. He was instrumental in organizing the Mercer Little League Baseball and Small Fry Football programs. He served as president and coach of each for several years. Mr. Wickliffe helped organize the Mercer-Harrodsburg Health Center, which became the Mercer County Health Department, and was active in the organization of the Mercer Industrial Board. He served as attorney for the Mercer County Board of Education and for Western Kentucky Gas. He was co-founder and director of Harrodsburg First Federal Savings and Loan Association, president and director of Farmers Tobacco Warehouse, chairman of the board of State Bank and Trust Company, and co=founder of Greenville Loan Company and the Alhom Window Company. He was a Kentucky Colonel and Admiral of the Kentucky Waterways. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #777 F&AM, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kentucky Bar Association and Mercer County Bar Association. He was past director of the Harrodsburg Rotary Club and past president of the Kentucky Junior Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Wickliffe received a Purple Heart during World War II. Additional survivors include: a son, William B. Wickliffe of Harrodsburg; a daughter, Christine W. Spragens of Marco Island, FL; a brother, Edwin Reynolds Wickliffe of Greenville; two grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren. Services for Mr. Wickliffe were held, at 2 p.m. Monday, at the United Presbyterian Church, Harrodsburg. Dr. Doug Slagle and Dr. Robert DeFoor officiated and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
