Notes for: Frederick ("Fred") J. Bodine, Jr.

See the notes below. It is uncertain whether Fred J. Bodine was Fred and Martha's son or grandson.

From Ronny Bodine:

In April 1940, Freddie Bodine, age 5, lived in Chattanooga, Tenn. with Martha Bodine, who was either his mother or grandmother. The census writing is ambiguous as to the exact relationship and in consideration of the fact that Martha would have been 56 years old at his birth it seems more likely she was his grandmother, but perhaps not. The 1958 and 1960 Chattanooga City Directories list Fred Bodine as a resident and employee of the power division of the T.V.A. The 1958 directory calls him Fred Bodine Jr. Fred Bodine died in October 2013, but his ashes were not interred in the Chattanooga National Cemetery's Columbarium until 9 June 2014.

Newspaper Obituary, The Times Free Press (Chattanooga, TN) of 8 June 2014.
Fred J. Bodine, a former Chattanooga resident, passed away in Los Angeles, Calif. He graduated from Chattanooga High School and was a United States Army veteran. He returned to Chattanooga after serving in the Army and worked with TVA. He became active in the Little Theater and was a member of the Theaters Hall of Fame. He later moved to California, earning his bachelor's degree in music and art from U.C.L.A. He retired from IBM. He is survived by three nieces, Janey Sherrell, Judy Coleman and Sue Bradley. A private graveside service will be conducted on Monday, June 9, 2014, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Military Honors. Central Funeral Home, 931-723-7774.

Although his mother would appear to have exceeded the usual age for child bearing, Fred's obituary refers to his being survived by three nieces, one of whom is Janey Sherrell. Janey is the daughter of Wallace Bodine (1910-1962) who would be Fred's brother. Possibly Fred was born out of wedlock to one of the Bodine daughters and was raised by Fred Bodine Sr. and his wife as their son.
