Obituary
Charles “Chuck” Walter Collins, Sr., 83 went to his eternal Home on October 19, 2019 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Collinsville, AL to Lewis A. and Charlyn Godbey Collins and had an older sister Charlotte Louise. Chuck grew up in Birmingham until moving to Tuscaloosa in his years of junior high school. He attended Tuscaloosa High School going on to the University of Alabama and graduating from Livingston College with a concentration in English and History. While in college he met the one whom his soul loved, Betty Faye “Babs” Fulton. They married in December 1956. They raised three children and Chuck and Babs were the faces behind Chuck Collins Studios of Tuscaloosa. You never saw Chuck without Babs and vice versa. They lived a unique life working together all the time, communicating without words, loving and being each other’s best friend always They shared antiquing, blue grass music, art festivals and traveling together. They enjoyed playing Dominoes with close friends, were avid readers and always their beloved Scottie dogs were with them. Chuck did have two passions that Babs did not share in: his love to bowl (he was inducted into the Tuscaloosa Bowlers Hall of Fame having bowled several perfect games), and then there was golf-his love for this sport brought him much pleasure, a fellowship with like-minded men and time outside to enjoy the gifts of God.

For over 40 years they had their studio together, their photography being recognized as some of the very best throughout the Southeast with clients near and far. Chuck received many awards in print competition, was named the Mississippi-Alabama Photographer of the year and was presented the National Award from the Professional Photographers of America. He served as a past president of Professional Photographers of MS-AL and sat on the Board of Governors of the Southeastern Professional Photographers of America. He was sought after as a judge for his peers print competitions and taught the art of portraiture throughout the Southeast. He earned and was a named a Master Craftsman Photographer of PPA for his artistic, creative and technical knowledge of the portraits he created. But it truly was the joy, delight, laughter and the sharing in the lives of their clients that brought Chuck the passion and quiet contentment of working in his career as a pictorial storyteller using his God given talent to create timeless memories for others.

Chuck and Babs Collins moved to Huntsville, AL in 2012. In December of 2012, he lost the love of his life, Babs, to her own battle with cancer.

Survivors include his loving sister and comedian partner, Charlotte Collins Tanner, and her five children and their families; his nephew, niece and her husband from Mississippi. Chuck Collins is survived by three children, Cheryl “Cherry” Collins Saint and husband, Bob, of Huntsville, Charles Walter “Chuck” Collins Jr. of Cottondale, and Christopher Scott Collins and wife, Ashley, of Helena. All three children of Chuck and Babs Collins have continued the line of being professional photographers in their lives at some time. They will continue the legacy of their parents love for life, music, love of family and trying to bring joy in the lives of others. Chuck, known as “Poppy”, is also survived by three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth and John Ross Collins, children of Scott and Ashley Collins. To Sarah Elizabeth Poppy shared his love for animals (SarahLiz is beginning college in August in pre-Veterinary) and his love for all music. John Ross began playing golf with his Poppy as a toddler and has a shared passion for the game and he inherited his Poppy’s sense of humor. Sarah Margaret, daughter of Cherry and Bob Saint, has inherited his conscience of social justice and skill of debate through many sessions with her Poppy. She is an attorney in Greensboro specializing in Education Law.
