CENTRAL CITY, Ky. — Charles Henry Shaver, 98, of Central City, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015. Charles was born in 1916 to E.G. and Mollie Shaver in Midland, Ky.

He graduated from Central City High School in 1934 and Kentucky Wesleyan College in 1940. At Kentucky Wesleyan, Charles was president of his sophomore class, earning departmental honors while earning his degree in biology. Also while in attendance, Charles sang tenor in the men's quartet, traveling the state and singing at various Methodist churches. He was subsequently elected to serve on the KWC Alumni Association Board.

After college, Charles began a teaching career, covering biology, chemistry, and physical education. First teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Martwick, Ky., he then went on to teach at Central City High School. After teaching, Charles began working for Aetna Casualty and Surety in Central City, where he would remain for over 30 years.

Charles was proud of his community. He was instrumental, along with a group of others, in starting the Central City Country Club. He always enjoyed playing golf, and was an original director and ardent supporter of the club for decades. Charles was also a Mason, and a member of the Lions Club Quartet. His father, E.G. Shaver, was one of the original organizers of the Central City Federal Savings and Loan Association in 1934, and served on the board of directors of the Association until 1963. Charles was elected to the board in 1963 and served until 1998. He served as chairman from the early 1980's to the early 1990's.

Charles was always at his happiest when with his wife and family. He married Susie Bodine in 1955. They celebrated 58 years of marriage and had seven children in a span of ten years. Faith was an important part of their lives. Charles was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Central City. He served the church in many capacities, but most enjoyed singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School. Charlesand Susie carried their love of the church into the community and with them in their daily lives. They sought to help those in need where they found them, giving time and guidance, not for recognition, but out of a genuine desire to help others. Charles shared his love of golf, music, and faith with his children. His positive outlook, and immeasurable kindness, touched everyone he knew. He was a kind, wonderful, and humble man, serving as a great example to all. Words cannot express how much he will be missed, but his children and grandchildren will continue to happily celebrate his life and values.

He is survived by six children, Robert Shaver (Alina), Kathy Graham (Steve), Carol Moses (John), Martha Shaver, Joe Shaver (Jonda), and John Shaver (Karen); and his 12 grandchildren, Charlie and Jake Shaver, Charlsey Graham, Taylor, Luke, Mollie, and Johnny Moses, Hayden and Katie Shaver, Sarah Wilson, and Steve and Craig Liesinger; and three great-grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Susie; a son, Charles Wade Shaver; his parents, E.G. and Mollie Shaver; a sister, Kathryn Weldon; and a brother, Robert G.Shaver.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Venetta Rutledge, Joy Hampton, Linda Randolph, and Shannon Walker.
