Notes for: William Wycliffe
There is a small genealogy for some Wycliffes in London in The Visitation of London, anno Domini 1633, 1634, and 1635. This was made by Sir Henry St. George, knight., Richmond herald, and deputy and marshal to Sr. Richard St. George, kt., Clarencieux king of armes. It is found in The Harleian Society Publications, v. 17, p. 376. It tells us that "Francis Wiccliffe of Wickcliffe hall Com. Yorke" and ---- daughter of Sr. ---- Rookesby Co. Yorke Knight" had son "Thomas Wiccliffe of Wiccliffe second son." And Thomas and "Mary dau'r of ---- Yonge" had a son "William Wiccliffe of London Marchantailor liueing [=living] a° 1634 eldest son" who married Elizabeth, dau'r of Tho. Yonge of Soylby Com. Leic." William was the oldest son and living in 1634. The shield shown there is that of the Wycliffe/Ellerton shield.
This is very interesting information since this William could be/probably is the father or brother of the David Wickliffe who ended up in America.
It would work that the progression goes Francis Wycliffe - Thomas Wycliffe - William Wycliffe and then the son/brother of William would be the David Wickliffe who went to America. I don't have sources, but my guess is that Francis was born around 1530; his son Thomas was born around 1560; and so William could have been born around 1585. That leaves room for the American David Wickliffe who was born about 1610. If the dates for these generations were later, then William and David were brothers.
William's name also is found in Special Collections at the Society of Genealogists: Radcliffe Box, Folder 1, Letter of July 17, 1957 from J. H. R. Anderson to Mr. Hart (p. 1). It says William was the son of Thomas Wycliffe and Mary Yong and the grandson of Francis Wycliffe, of Wycliffe Hall, who married a Rokeby. This William was supposedly a tailor merchant in London. He was living in 1634.
In his letter, J. H. R. Anderson thinks William could be the father of the Dorothy Wycliffe who married William Rawnderson. They supposedly had the following children:
- Marmaduke, b. 1635
- Elizabeth, b. 1636
- Thomas, b. 1639
- Edith, b. 1641
In J. H. R. Anderson's letter of May 20, 1959 he says that this William was the oldest son of Thomas Wycliffe and Mary Young. He maried Elizabeth Young, daughter of Thomas Yonge, of Solby, Co. Leicesteshire.
