Notes for: Mary Wycliffe
This family comes from An History of Richmondshire, in the North Riding of the County of York; together with those parts of the Everwicschire of Domesday which form The Wapentakes of Lonsdale, Ewecross, and Amunderness, in the Counties of York, Lancaster, and Westmoreland, by Thomas Dunham WHITAKER. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees (and others), 1823. 2 volumes. It says the first three generations "are not sufficiently proved." Here is the info given there on this family:
A daughter, married Leyton Hetherington, rector of Manfield, in Com. York.
And here is additional information from The Genealogist (New Series), H. W. Forsyth Harwood, v. xxi. George Bell & Sons: London, 1905, pp. 95-99:
Her first name, Mary, came from The Genealogist.
Marshall Plantagenet's The History of Yorkshire: Wapentake of Gilling West, in the genealogy of the Wycliffes at Gayles (p. 157), says this:
Mary, eldest dau. She married _____ Layton of Hetherington, rector of the church of Manfield. They had offspring.
Publications of the Surtees Society, v. 118 (1910) says this about the two Leyton Etheringtons:
1741. 13 March. The Rev. Mr. Layton Etherington, curate of the chapelry of Forcett and Mrs. Ann Wycliffe of this chapelry, married. Wycliffe Registers.
The following is an abstract of his father's will :
1718. 3 Sept. Will of Layton Etherington of Washington, M.A. To my eldest son, Fitzherbert Etherington, all my messuages, lands, etc., in Gilling, paying to my daughter, Dorothy Etherington, 100. Whereas my late mother, Jane Etherington, by her will dated 28th March, 1706, gave to her eldest son, ^Samuel Etherington, ground called Tofts, etc., and failing him and his heirs to me, Layton Etherington, her second son. If my brother Samuel die x.p., I give it to my younger son, Layton Ebherington. To my son, Layton Etherington, the High-fields, the Low-pastures, the New-piece, the riggs and a ridge in the Eastfield, etc., and the Pinder's-tofts, etc., paying to my daughter, Mary Etherington, when 21, 200. To my daughter, Dorothy, 200. Residue to my wife, Mary Etherington, she executrix. Raine, Text. Ebor.
