Notes for: William Wycliffe
This family comes from An History of Richmondshire, in the North Riding of the County of York; together with those parts of the Everwicschire of Domesday which form The Wapentakes of Lonsdale, Ewecross, and Amunderness, in the Counties of York, Lancaster, and Westmoreland, by Thomas Dunham WHITAKER. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees (and others), 1823. 2 volumes. Here is the info given there on this family:
William Wycliffe, of Wycliffe, Esquire, eldest son and heir, living _____ 1596, will dated 1606, ob. 1611. Married Muryell, daughter of John Blackstone, of Blaykston, in Com. Pal. Durham, Esquire.
It looks like "ob." means "died."
He had two daughters but no male heir. The Wycliffe estate then passed into the Witham and Tunstall families and then just into the Tunstall line. William Wycliffe was the last in the male line of Lords of Wycliffe. The Tunstalls held the Manor of Wycliffe and Ovington until the late 19th century.
The book on the Pearson family has his wife Muryell listed as Margaret. And on p. 93 it appears to call her Jane Meriall. The Plantagenet book calls her Muriel; it seems to be very well researched so I will go with Muriel.
The Pearson book goes on to say that William became Lord of Wycliffe and Ovington after the death of his father Francis. He lived in Northumberland where he served the Earl of Northumberland. He supposedly conformed, but was accused of recusancy in 1603.
His name in one marriage record is Gulielmus Wyclyff and hers is Mirialle Blakeston.
I found Muriel's father's will in Publications of the Surtees Society (1860), v. 38. William is mentioned a couple of times as his son-in-law.
