Notes for: Francis Wycliffe
This family comes from An History of Richmondshire, in the North Riding of the County of York; together with those parts of the Everwicschire of Domesday which form The Wapentakes of Lonsdale, Ewecross, and Amunderness, in the Counties of York, Lancaster, and Westmoreland, by Thomas Dunham WHITAKER. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees (and others), 1823. 2 volumes. Here is the info given there on this family:
Francis Wycliffe, of Wycliffe, Esquire, eldest son and heir, living 1585. Married Jane, daughter of Thomas Rookeby, of Morton, Co., York, living 1610.
I'm not sure about the overall order of their children, but the boys seem to be in order from oldest to youngest and the girls, too. I just don't know where the girls come in relationship to the boys. It is not clear in Whitaker.
The Pearson family book says Ralph had no issue and that he was the first son. So Ralph would have been the Lord of Wycliffe and Ovington first, then the second-born son Francis. This is a disagreement, therefore, about who was William's first-born son. The book does not mention Muriel or John as children of Francis and Jane Wycliffe.
The Pearson book (92-93) also say Francis was called a "vagrant papist" as he moved around from house to house to avoid the authorities. He was captured in 1592, found guilty of some charges, and imprisoned in York Castle where he died in 1594.

Here is some interesting information from An historical, topographical, and descriptive view of the county palatine of Durham; comprehending the various subjects of natural, civil, and ecclesiastical geography, agriculture, mines, manufactures, navigation, trade, commerce, buildings, antiquities, curiosities, public institutions, charities, population, customs, biography, local history, &c, by E. Mackenzie and M. Ross, p. 85:
Information from the book above says that Francis Wycliffe, the grandson of Catherine (Surtees) Place, inherited a 1/3 share of Dinsdale. In the course of time, however, all of Dinsdale became gradually vested in Christopher Place, Esq., a descdendant of Catherine Place. The other two shares went to Catherine Place's daughters Ann Brandling and Elizabeth Blakiston.
