Byron Braz Bates, 92, of Union Grove died Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, at his residence. Mr. Bates was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Marshall County to John B. and Dora Martin Bates. He was married to Thessell Bodine Bates. He served in the United States Army in World War II and was a farmer. He is survived by his wife: Thessell Bates of Union Grove; sons: Kenneth Bates and Phillip Bates of Union Grove; daughter: Martha Bates of Huntsville; brother: Lewis Bates of Arab; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son: Darrell Bates. The funeral was at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at Gober Funeral Chapel, with Arthur Feemster officiating. Burial was in Arab Memorial Cemetery with Gober Funeral Chapel directing. Pallbearers were Kevin Besser, Kevin Howse, Darren Bennett, John Bates, Kenneth Bates and Phillip Bates.

Thessell "Tia" Bates, 89, of Union Grove died Saturday, March 24, 2012, at her residence. Mrs. Bates was born July 13, 1922, in Marshall County to Emmett E. and Brunner Oaks Bodine. She was married to Byron Braz Bates, who preceded her in death Jan. 23, 2012. In the early 1940s she taught school at Nixon Chapel and in the late 60s at Union Grove. In the 80s she taught for several years at the Arab Child Development Center. Later she cared for children of working parents in her home. She is survived by her children: Kenneth Bates and Phillip Bates of Union Grove and Martha Bates of Huntsville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son: Darrell Bates. The funeral was at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at Gober Funeral Chapel with John B. Bates officiating. Burial was in Arab Memorial Cemetery with Gober Funeral Chapel directing. Pallbearers were Kenneth Bates, Phillip Bates, Darren Bennett, Kevin Besser, Kevin Howse and John Bates.

Children: Bryon Darrell (1945), Kenneth Dean (1947), Phillip Keith (1952), Martha Jane Suzanne (1960).
