He served in the Civil War in the 18th New York Infantry.

In June 1850, Charles H. Bodine, age 15, lived in the home of Julia Everitt, in Wallkill, Orange County, working as a laborer. In June 1860, Charles Bodine, 25, employed as a carman, lived in Wallkill, Orange County, with his wife Julia and 3-month old son George. On 23 Sept 1861, Charles H. Bodine, age 23, enlisted in Company D, 18th New York Infantry Regiment at Middletown. He was mustered out 23 May 1863 at New Albany, New York. On 20 Jan 1864, Charles H. Bodine, aged 28, enlisted in Company K, 15th New York Cavalry Regiment at Wallkill, Ulster County. On 17 June 1865 he was transferred to Company K, 2nd New York Cavalry Regiment and was mustered out 9 Aug 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. In June 1870, working as a horse trainer, and In June 1880, Charles Bodine lived in Middletown, Orange County with his wife Julia and son, William and spinster sister-in-law, Rebecca Shons. In June 1900, Charles Bodine, age 65, a day laborer, lived in Middletown and reported that in 42 years of marriage, his wife Julia had borne 3 children of whom only their son, William, who was living with them, survived. Charles Bodine, described as a horse trainer, was living 15 Feb 1906 when he gave a product endorsement published in the Middletown Daily Press.

Charles H. Bodine, a well-known and aged resident of Middletown, died at the home of his son, William H. Bodine, in that city, Monday morning, after an illness of two weeks with pneumonia. Mr. Bodine was born in Cortland, the son of Adam and Hester Bodine. He is the last of fourteen children. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having first enlisted and served in the 18th New York Infantry for ten months. He afterwards re-enlisted in the 18th New York Cavalry, serving under Gen. Custer until the war ended. The remains were interred at Phillipsburgh.
