Notes for: Archie Delmar Bodine

From Ronny Bodine:

On 5 June 1917, Archie Bodine registered for the World War 1 draft in Kent County. He reported he was single and worked for the Milford Fish & Oil Factory. He did not know his birth date and a note was included on his registration reading "This man does not know his age nor the date of his birth, and has no means of ascertaining the same." It was estimated that he was about 29. He also signed the registration with an 'X'. In 1920, Archie Bodine, age 29 and single, lived in Milford, Kent County working as a laborer. In 1940, he lived in Sussex County, aged 61 and single. In 1942, he registered for the World War 2 draft as a resident of Milton, Sussex County, Delaware. He thought he was 63 years old and again signed with an "X'.

Obituary, The Salisbury Times (Salisbury, Md.) of 25 Sept 1952.
MILTON, Del.---Archie Bodine about 70, known to many people in Sussex County, died at his small home near Milton Saturday. A farm laborer, Mr. Bodine had lived near here for the past 20 years and had been ill for some time. Neighbors who had been caring for him found him dying on Saturday morning. Coroner William Marvel who conducted an inquiry, said the death resulted from natural causes. Mr. Bodine was born near Milford, a son of the late John and Mary Betts Bodine. His only known survivors are a brother George H. Bodine of Milford, and two nephews. Funeral services were to be held in the Wilson Funeral Home, Milton. today at 2 p m. with the Rev. Ralph Parkhill, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was to be in Union Cemetery.

From Social Security Applications and Claims:
Archie Delmar Bodine applied for a SSN in April 1937 and reported he was born 24 Nov 1881 in Milford, Delaware, son of John and Mary A. (Betts) Bodine. [Note: If he did not know his birth date in 1917, is the one he gave in 1937 correct? It would seem correct date his parents reported in 1900 should be accurate.]

Note from Dave: Archie's parents on his WWI draft were listed as John and Lillie B. She still might not have been his birth mother, though. And about the "George H. Bodine" listed in his obit above as his "brother," we think this could be his uncle or his half-brother Harry Bodine.
