RUSSELL S. BODINE, 79, of EATONTOWN, died Friday, Nov. 18, at St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Mr. Bodine was a communicant and a former member of the Vestry of St. James Episcopal Church, Long Branch. He was a 1943 graduate of Long Branch High School and served as the president of his class. Mr. Bodine served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a replacement with the 97th division of the 303rd regiment in Europe. He also served one year in the occupation of Japan. Mr. Bodine retired in 1986 after serving for 35 years as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Long Branch. He was the past president and secretary of the local letter carriers union No. 637. He served for 41 years on the Board of Directors of the Monmouth County Postal Employees Credit Union, where he was a past president and treasurer. Mr. Bodine was a member of the American Legion No. 346, Neptune, a member of the Long Branch Old Guard, and served as director in 2004. He was active in local politics, and he served on the Long Branch Zoning Board of Adjustment for 14 years. He was an avid golfer and New York Yankees fan. Mr. Bodine was born and raised in West Long Branch and lived most of his married life in the city of Long Branch before moving to Eatontown. He was predeceased by his parents, Russell and Edith Bodine, and his sister Charlotte Luther. He was blessed by God with his wife of 57 years, Jeanne M. Bodine; four daughters, Claudia Widdis, Denise Vacchiano, Jennifer Williams and Melissa Juska; nine grandchildren, Matthew Widdis, Amanda Widdis, Elizabeth Widdis, Maria Vacchiano, Michael Vacchiano, Spencer Appleby, Harrison Williams, Benjamin Williams, and Marshall Williams; his twin sister, Mildred "Sis" Beebe; and his brother, Jay Bodine. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Woolley Funeral Home, 10 Morrell St. at Broadway, Long Branch. A requiem Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Episcopal Church, 300 Broadway, Long Branch. Interment will be private.
