Notes for: Patrick Louis Bodine
From Ronny Bodine:
Obituary, the Fresno Bee of 22 May 1937.
VISALIA (Tulare Co.), May 22. Louis Bodine, 22-month-old son of James P. Bodine, Visalia district rancher, drowned last night in the St. Johns River, which is now running bank full. The drowning occurred at the ditch in the yard of the Bodine ranch, a short distance east of Cutler Park, where the river is at high stage. The baby had been playing with his 4-year-old brother, Dennis, in the yard and investigators say the children presumably climbed the fence, from which the younger brother fell into the river. Mrs. Beatrice Rhodes, housekeeper at the Bodine ranch, who was busy preparing supper, noticed the children were missing and started out looking for them. She met Dennis, who told her that his baby brother had fallen Into the water. Mrs. Rhodes summoned Claude Bodine, brother of her employer, and together they searched the banks several times until they found the body entangled in some wire. The body was brought to the Visalia Fire Station, where an inhalator was used in a vain effort to revive the baby. Later the body was removed to the Brooks & Poor Mortuary. The brothers' father was not at home at the time of the tragedy, but was working at Porterville. Coroner Roy Brooks is making an investigation.
