Notes for: Richard ("Dick") Vernon Bodin

Richard Vernon Bodin, age 89, of the Town of Bayview, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born July 27, 1924 in the family home in Houghton, the son of Elmer and Hazel (Bergman) Bodin.
Richard graduated Washburn High School as Salutatorian of the Class of 1942. His early life was spent working on Lake Superior as a commercial fisherman along side his Father and brother Roger. His ROTC and marine knowledge served him well when he was called to duty during WWII. Richard served in the U.S Army, 320th combat Engineer Battalion, 95th Division, liberating Metz, France in November of 1944. He earned a purple heart and bronze star for his heroic achievements during this time.
Following his military service, Richard graduated with a Business Administration Degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. While in Madison he pledged Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity. There he also pledge his heart to the love of his life, Doris Rosemary Spangler Bodin. They were married for 65 years. Following their marriage, the couple returned to Bodin's Resort to raise their family. Richard was key to the daily operations of Bodin Fisheries in Bayfield and Bodin's Marina in Ashland. He, along with the Universities of WI, Madison and Cornell U was also instrumental in efforts to make use of under utilized fish and fish waste products. Richard continued to manage the Bodins into his retirement.
Richard was a member of Emmanuel and Messiah Lutheran Churches, the 320th Combat Engineer Battalion, Washburn VFW, Free Masons, Bay Area Chambers of Commerce, Town of Bayview Board, and City of Washburn Economical Development Corp in the post DuPont years.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; 5 children, Bonnie Bodin, Jeffery (Maria) Bodin, Beta Bodin, Thomas (Janet) Bodin and William (Karen) Bodin; 7 grandchildren, Eric Bodin, Scott (Elizabeth) Bodin, Hannah Damberg, Lucia Damberg, Alex Bodin, Chelsea Bodin and Matthew Bodin; a great-grandchild, Evan Bodin; and sister-in-law, Nell Bodin and her children, Wendy Murphy, Deborah O'Leary and Robert John Bodin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Roger.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM, Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Washburn with Pastor Nancy Hanson officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the service time at the church. Inurnment and Chequamegon Veterans Post #690 military services will be held at 3:00 PM, on Saturday at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ashland.
