James Berdine, 87 of Winterset, formerly of Shannon City, died Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the Community Care Center in Stuart. Celebration of life services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2016 at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Pastor Lila Greene will officiate. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in rural Shannon City. Open visitation will be from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton with family receiving friends from 2:00 - 4:00. Memorials are to the Shannon City Community Church. Online condolences may be given at www.powersfh.com. James Elton Berdine was born on November 9, 1928 in Nicollet, Minn., a son to Earl Dewey and Pansy Belle Berdine. He attended Shannon City High School and graduated with the class of 1947. James was united in marriage to Betty Rose Wagner in West Des Moines on September 4, 1949. They lived a long portion of their lives in Afton, Iowa where they raised three sons. Jim and Betty moved to a farm near Shannon City in 1978 and on to Winterset in 2011. Jim worked most of his life as a cross-country truck driver before moving to the farm. He was an active member of Shannon City Community Church for many years. James is survived by his wife, Betty, his brother Earl (wife Jackie) Berdine of Omaha, NE; three sons Ron (wife Sharon) Berdine of Earlham, Richard (wife Deniz) Berdine of Cedar Crest, NM and Randy (wife Shelly) Berdine of Huddleston, VA; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Russell and sister, Juanita.

Betty Berdine, 91 of Winterset, passed away on September 3, 2022 at Azria Health in Winterset. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 8, 2022 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel with a visitation one hour prior beginning at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Shannon City, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed to AHeinz 57 Pet Rescue in DeSoto in memory of Betty's love for animals. Betty was born on February 2, 1931 to William and Stella (Carpenter) Wagner in West Des Moines. She attended school in West Des Moines and graduated in 1949. On September 4, 1949, Betty was married to James Berdine. She later continued her education and became a certified cosmetologist. Betty was the proud owner of Betty's Beauty Shop in Afton for many years. Betty was a member the Afton Methodist Church and later the Shannon City Community Church. She had a love for animals and gave a wonderful home to many cats, dogs, and even farm animals over the years. Betty enjoyed cooking and always made sure to have food on the table for her family to enjoy. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren. It always made her day to receive a phone call, card or visit from one of them. Betty is survived by her three sons, Ronald (Sharon) Berdine of Winterset, Richard (Deniz) Berdine of Cedar Crest, NM, and Randall (Michele) Berdine of Huddleston, VA; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Berdine; parents, William and Stella Wagner; brothers, Earl, John, Joey, Leslie, Wesley, and Charles; and sisters, Goldie and Mary.
