Obituary, Naples (FL) Daily News of 6 Oct 2022 and St. Louis (MO) Post-Dispatch of 9 Oct 2022.
On October 5, Robert J. Bodine died peacefully at age 98. Born on September 20, 1924, Bob was the first child of Jesse and Lucile Neber Bodine. He grew up in St. Louis and graduated from Clayton High School in 1942. Bob enrolled at the University of Missouri-Rolla, but soon chose to serve America in World War II. He joined the U.S. Merchant Marine and was commissioned and served in the Merchant Marine throughout the War, including an assignment in the Middle East. Bob returned to Missouri and completed his college degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Bob began his career in the aluminum industry making castings at Bodine Aluminum, his father's small company on Cass Avenue. After his father's death in 1957, Bob became president of the company and, together with his brother Jack, significantly expanded the business at a new facility on Walton Road. The company continued to grow substantially as Bob anticipated market shifts and developed many innovative practices that continue to sustain the company, now an integral part of Toyota Motor. Bob was never afraid to take risks to improve Bodine Aluminum. A cornerstone of the company's success were the personal bonds he formed with customers and employees, many of whom remained lifelong friends. When not at Bodine Aluminum, Bob could be found working in his yard or with the numerous civic and charitable organizations he championed. He was a life member of the Salvation Army and served as chairman of its "Tree of Lights" campaign. He was president of the St. Louis Zoo Association and a member of the St. Joseph Hospital board of directors. Bob was a member of the Veiled Prophet Organization, the Moolah Temple Shrine, and the St. Louis Rotary Club for over seventy years, including as Rotary Club president. He was chairman and a director of the St. Louis Young Presidents Organization, a member of the Cass Bank board of directors for over forty years, and a member and chairman of the Aluminum Association of St. Louis. His many hobbies included golf, tennis, restoring classic cars and entertaining friends and family, especially at the Lake of the Ozarks and on family vacations. In later years, Bob enjoyed his time in Naples, Florida playing golf and tennis and remaining active in a variety of local charitable and civic groups. Bob was married for sixty-four years to Joanne Watling Bodine, who passed away in 2014. They have two daughters, Carol Lloyd and Gayle Garrett (Ted, M.D.) of St. Louis, four grandchildren, Julie Ponciroli (Steve), Jacque Mileusnic (Mike), Kristin Keller (Jesse, M.D.), and Carter Garrett (Carolyn) of St. Louis, and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jack Bodine (Mary Jane) of St. Louis. His family and friends remember Bob's optimism, patriotism and generosity, especially to his myriad of civic and charitable projects. A Memorial Service will be held at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church, 9450 Clayton Rd., Ladue on Tuesday, October 11 at 4:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army in Saint Louis or the Salvation Army of Naples, Florida.
