Notes for: Lorenz Kellum Bodine
From Ronny Bodine:
On 5 June 1917, Larnz Bodine registered for the World War I draft in Camden, New Jersey. He stated he was born 10 Sept 1886 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, was single, worked for the Victor Talking Machine Company and suffered with a crippled hand and foot. In 1930, Lorenz K. Bodine, age 43 and single, lived in Deptford, Gloucester County, New Jersey where he was employed as a farm manager.
1940 Haddon, Camden Co., NJ: Lorenz Bodine 53 NJ salesman-grain business, Anne 48 NY wife. On 1 April 1935, both lived in Westville, Gloucester County, New Jersey. [Yet, the 1940 Camden City Directory lists Lorenz K. Bodine with wife Elsie, as does the 1943 directory. Records of the Union Methodist Episcopal Church of Camden, NJ record the birth on 11 March 1895 and baptism on 4 June 1895 of Elsie May Burrough, daughter of Charles and Sadie Burrough. Perhaps Anne was a recording error or a pet name or she was in fact Elsie Ann May Burrough. The 1940 census was the only instance of her name as Anne.]
In 1942, Lorenz Kellum Bodine, stating he was born 10 Sept 1886 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, registered for the World War II draft in Camden, New Jersey. As his next of kin he named Charles Bodine, of the Camden Brewing Company.
From New Jersey Marriage Records:
Lorenz K. Bodine AND Elsie M. Burrough were married October 1949 in Audobon, Camden County.
The records of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Beechwood, Ocean County, NJ notes the death of Lorenz K. Bodine on 11 Jan 1961. The state of Florida recorded his death in Pinellas County in January 1961. The 1956 St. Petersburg, Florida City Directory lists Lorenz and Elsie Bodine as residents. Both maintained their membership with St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beechwood, NJ and in Feb 1963 Elsie Bodine was dismissed by the church due to her membership transfer to a church in St. Petersburg. Newspaper Obituary, St. Petersburg Times (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Friday, of 19 Nov 1976.
Mrs. Elsie M. Bodine, 81, a former New Jersey policewoman and the person responsible for having Old Glory officially named "The American Flag," died Thursday (Nov. 18, 1976). Mrs. Bodine discovered through reading Ripley's Believe [It] or Not column in 1937 that although Congress had passed numerous acts concerning the Stars and Stripes, no act existed officially calling it "The American Flag." She immediately contacted her congressman in New Jersey, and made several trips to Washington, D.C., during the next two years concerning the matter. Congress passed a bill in 1969 officially proclaiming our national colors as "The American Flag." Mrs. Bodine, known as the "mother of our flag," had also been honored by several groups, and donated numerous flags to schools and organizations. A native of Camden, N.J., she moved to Holiday three years ago from St. Petersburg, where she lived 29 years. In addition to a daughter, Mrs. Nellie N. McCord, St. Petersburg, she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Violet Schultz, Camden, N.J.; a grandchild, and two great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Downs-Ford Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Royal Palm Cemetery, with Rev. Edward Griffiths, of the United Asbury Methodist Church of Elfers officiating.
Note: Nellie McCord, noted as a child of Lorenz and Elsie must have been Elsie's child of a previous marriage as Nellie was born 25 Sept 1912 and died in Jan 1979.
