Obituary, The Stark County News (Toulon, IL) of Wed., 14 Feb 1917.
Mahala R. Hurd was born in the state of New Jersey, November 16, 1835, and died February 5, 1917, being at the time 81 years, 2 months, and 19 days of age. She came to Illinois with her parents, in 1837, who settled in Millbrook township, Peoria county. On the 22d day of June, 1854, in the City of Peoria, she was married to Henry Swank. To this union four children were born, Wilberforce, Mary L., Sarah E., and John H. Swank. Mary L. and John H. are both deceased, the other two were present at last services. Mr. Swank died October 6, 1860. On November 9, 1862, Mrs. Swank was married to John M. Hurd. To this union one son was born: Charles M. Hurd, of Seattle, Wash., who was unable to be present. There are twelve grandchildren: One in Elmwood; two in Peoria who have planned a public opening of a clothing house, and the dear old grandmother of 81 years was counting on the pleasure of being present, but God ordered otherwise. There are three grandchildren here and she counted much on the nearest one's daily visit. She said Jimmie is always willing to help me out. There are three grandchildren in Iowa and three in Seattle, Wash. There are also twenty-three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hurd joined the M. E. church early in life and was in perfect love with all the work of the church. Of her parents' immediate family, only two survive. One brother, John C. Bodine, of Elmwood, and one sister, Mrs. Charles DeWolfe, of West Jersey. For a number of years Mrs. Hurd successfully kept a hotel here. Many a wearly traveler got food and lodging in her home. All were welcome. Her many acts of kindness and charity will not soon be forgotten. The last thing she did was to send a well filled basket to a sick man in town. Early Sunday morning preceding her death Mrs. Hurd suffered a paralytic stroke from which she never rallied, and passed peacefully away Monday evening. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the M. E. church, Rev. J. T. Bliss officiating. Music was furnished by Mesdames Vansickle and Garrison, and Messrs. Swank and Wyerman, with Miss Dorothy Hazen at the piano. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.

Burials in West Jersey Cemetery, Stark County, Illinois.
