Notes for: James Irvin Bodine

James Bodine, a graduate of Texas University and a Seaman Second Class who had joined the U.S. Navy in March, was struck in the head by a machine gun bullet when his ship, the USS Pensacola, was attacked by enemy planes during the battle of Santa Cruz and died nine hours later. He was buried at sea 300 miles from Santa Cruz in the Coral Sea with full military honors. His name is engraved on the monument at Fort William McKinley, Manila, the Philippines.
