Obituary, Trenton Evening Times (Trenton, N.J.) of 7 Sept 1948.
A friendly wrestling match proved fatal yesterday to John Bodine, 28, of Delaware Avenue, Florence. He died in St. Francis Hospital from a broken neck. Police Chief August Glass of Florence Township said Bodine attended a volunteer firemen's picnic which was held Sunday on a Florence Township farm. During the outing he began grappling with Harmon Wright, 20, of Florence Station. The wrestling match ended suddenly when Bodine was thrown to the ground and failed to get up. The injured man was rushed to St. Francis Hospital in an automobile. Physicians there said he had suffered a broken neck. He died 12 hours later. No charges have been filed against Wright, Chief Glass said, since the death appeared to be accidental. Bodine, who was a toolman at the Florence Foundry, is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret Pontoriero Bodine; a daughter, Beverly Ann; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Bodine; a sister, Mary, and five brothers, Earl, William, Craig, Ira and Louis, all of Florence. He was a member of the Florence Volunteer Fire Company, No. 2. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hartmann Funeral Home, 40 Crosswicks Street, Bordentown. The Rev. John Matthiesen of Trinity Lutheran Church, Trenton, will conduct services, and interment will be in Colonial Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday night.
