Charles Bodine, age 20 and single, was living in 1930 with his mother in Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont and working as a salesman in a grocery store. He served on the Benning Fire Department for many years and retired in Jan 1955 after having served as Chief from 1952. He also served as Bennington Town Chairman to 1955, District Coordinator of Civil Defense 1956 and later was Trustee of Bennington Village in the 1970s. Elva (Parker) Bodine was the daughter of Edward W. Parker.

Sturgess, Methodist Episcopal Minister.

Charles Heisler Bodine., Sr., 68, of 109 Morgan St., a former Bennington village trustee and fire chief, died Saturday morning at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center where he had been a patient since Nov. 11. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Mehar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Sidney J. Lambert, pastor of theFirst United Methodist Church, officiating. Mr. Bodine was a Methodist. Born in North Adams, Mass., Feb. 14, 1910, he was the son of Charles H. and Minnie (Bushnell) Bodine. His early education was received in North Adams and Bennington. He was a resident of Bennington for the major part of his life. A route salesman for more than 30 years with Fairdale Farms Inc., he retired only a few years ago. During the years with Fairdale Farms, he was fondly known as "Charles" by both young and old. A long-time member of the Putnam Hose Company of the Bennington Fire Department, he had given many hours of volunteer duty there and was elected fire chief in 1952, serving in that post for three years. At the time of his death he was an honorary member. His public service also included sitting on the board of village trustees in the 50s. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he formerly belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1332. He was an active member of the Bennington Club in his younger years. His marriage to the former Elva Parker was solemnized in the Methodist Church here June 23, 1935. Besides his wife, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Judith) Elwell of Satasota, Fla.; two sons, Charles H. Jr. of Newport, R.I., and Barry L. of Southington, Conn.; seven grandchildren; a sister, Ruth B. Bodine and a brother, Harold M. Bodine, both of Bennington; and several cousins. Entombment will be in Park Lawn Chapel with burial to be in this cemetery in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or one's favorite charity through the funeral home office. All members of the Bennington Fire Department will meet at the funeral home tonight at 7:30 to pay respects to the family of Mr. Bodine. All members of the former Village of Bennington Board of Trustees will meet at the funeral home tonight at 7:15 to pay respects to the family of Mr. Bodine.

BENNINGTON---Elva (Parker) Bodine, widow of Charles H. Bodine Sr., a former resident of 206 School St., died Sunday morning at the Vermont Veterans Home after a long illness. Born in Bennington April 17, 1913, the daughter of the late Lewis Hodgerney and the former Bessie Parker, she was educated in Bennington. She married Charles H. Bodine Sr. in Bennington June 23, 1935. He died Dec. 2, 1978. She was employed at the Bennington College Bookstore as assistant manager until her retirement. Mrs. Bodine was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bennington. Survivors include one daughter, Judith Elwell of North Adams, Mass.; two sons, Charles H. Bodine Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., and Barry L. Bodine of Alexandria, Va.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother-in-law, Harold "Friday" Bodine of Bennington; and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Ruth Bodine, who died Nov. 5, 1990. The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Louis Guariniello, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington officiating. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday from 7-9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance. Entombment will be in Park Lawn Chapel with burial in the spring. If friends desire, contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Bodine to Vermont Chapter of the American Cancer Society, Vermont Heart Fund or the Diabetes Association through the Mahar & Son Funeral Home offices, P.O.
