Obituary The Fredonia Censor (Fredonia, N.Y.) of 13 Feb 1958.
Committal services were conducted at Friendship for retired Chautauqua County Judge and Surrogate Hugh V. N. Bodine, 71, of Jamestown, who died unexpectedly last Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8, 1958) in his home. The noted jurist, one of the county's most beloved figures, was stricken shortly after he had been shoveling show in front of his house. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the First Congregational Church, Jamestown, where Judge Bodine was an active member, serving in many administrative posts. The Rev. George H. Tolley, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Jamestown, officiated. A man of warm personality and droll humor, Judge Bodine was in constant demand as speaker or toastmaster for gatherings of almost every organization in the county. He managed to accomodate most of them despite a demanding schedule of responsibilities in professional, business and fraternal activities. Judge Bodine was elevated to the county bench in January 1944, after a long career in the law, by appointment of former Gov. Thomas E. Dewey. He succeeded his friend and colleague, Lee L. Ottaway of Lakewood, who had been elected Supreme Court justice. He was elected to a six-year term as county judge the following November and was re-elected in 1950. He retired Dec. 31, 1956 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. Born Feb. 12, 1886 in Lodi, Judge Bodine grew up in Friendship and returned there to practice law after graduating from Cornell University. He moved to Jamestown in 1920. A member and past master of Allegany Masonic Lodge, Friendship, Judge Bodine was elevated to the 33rd degree, highest in Masonry, last September in Boston, Mass. He was active in many granches of the order. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna P. Bodine and a daughter, Mrs. Josephine Ward of West Palm Beach, Fla.
Anna P. Bodine sold land in Jamestown on 22 July 1960 to William P. Swenson (Dunkirk Evening-Observer of 28 July 1960).
