Elizabeth A. "Betty" Pruitt, 73, of Newberry, died at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital on Monday morning June 6, 2016 after a brief struggle with cancer. Born on February 18, 1943 in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Clifford and Clara (Hummelgard) Bodine. Betty earned her LPN license from Northern Michigan University and was employed in hospitals in California, Minneapolis, Chicago and Newberry. She met and married Charles Pruitt who was stationed at Kincheloe AFB. He preceded her in death in 1995. She was a talented artist who enjoyed painting and drawing, and was an avid reader. As her sight failed, she then enjoyed audiobooks. Besides her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her daughter Barbara and her sister Susan. Survivors include her children Charles Pruitt of Pecatonica, IL; Karen (Steve) Favakeh of Evanston, IL; Robert (Kris) Pruitt of Valencia, CA; James (Lisa) Pruitt of Crystal lake, IL; Deborah Krueger of Evanston, IL; Katherine Pruitt of Santa Clarita, CA; and Daniel Pruitt of Evanston, IL. Also surviving are grandchildren Maxwell, Henry, Zachary, Kira, Bryn, Brandon and Tyler. Her siblings include Grace Flora of New Holstein, WI; Connie (Roger) Latvala and Kip (Diane) Bodine of Kalamazoo, and Deborah Johnson of Newberry. Several nieces and nephews also survive and her special friend Ed Fillman. According to her wishes, Betty was cremated and a memorial service will take place at a later date. Betty wished to express her gratitude to the Newberry Senior Center where she enjoyed the meals and companionship and looked forward to exercising at the HNJH Wellness Center, facilities which have enriched the lives of Newberry senior citizens.
