Barbara (Butterfield) Bodine is the daughter of Chester H. Butterfield. She is a 1948 graduate of Wellesley College. Richard Bodine, who served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Force, is a 1948 graduate of Lehigh University with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.

Richard P. Bodine, founder of Bodine Assembly Systems in Bridgeport and a longtime resident of Easton, died of lung cancer Monday in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was 66. Born Nov. 2, 1926, in Fairfield, he was a son of the late A. V. and Ethel Phillips Bodine. Mr. Bodine graduated from Lehigh University in 1943 with a mechanical engineering degree. He interrupted his studies briefly to serve in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Bodine, along with his brother Edward F. Bodine, transformed The Bodine Corp. from a small maker of drilling and metal cutting machines, into one of the world's foremost manufacturers of high-speed assembly and test systems. Mr. Bodine served on numerous civic, charitable and sporting organizations, including the Easton Zoning Board of Appeals and the Board of Education. In Bridgeport, he served as president of the Rotary Club and chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. He also served as board president for the united Way of Eastern Fairfield County, director of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, chairman of the board of trustees for the United Congregational Church, and president of Brooklawn Country Club. In 1990, Mr. Bodine was elected chairman of the National Machine Tool Builder's Association, overseeing the organization's change to manufacturing technology. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Butterfield Bodine of Easton; two sons, Richard P. Bodine Jr. and David Bodine, both of Easton; a daughter, Nancy B. Wolcott of Winnetka, Ill.; a brother, Edward F. Bodine of Southport; a sister, Betty B. Swain of Fairfield; and six grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Bodine. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Congregational Church, 877 Park Ave. at State Street, Bridgeport. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richard and Barbara Bodine Fund, c/o Bridgeport Area Foundation 280 State St., Bridgeport 06604.
