Notes for: John L. Bodine

This family comes from Karole Kurnow (Karolejo at attbi.com). John's tombstone says, "Gone but not forgotten." The name on the stone is "John L. Bodine." He is buried in West Oak Grove Cemetery in Minnesota.

I asked Karole if it was known what religion John and his family were. I asked this since there is a line of Bodines in Minnesota who are Catholic. That would help narrow down who his ancestors might have been. Karole said that John's family married into some Methodists, but it wasn't known what John was. They'll do some checking around.

Karole wrote, "There is also a Martin R. Bodine buried in West Oak Grove Cemetery. He was born February 21, 1853 and died March 7, 1933. (He was married to Julia B. ? born March 15, 1855 and died Aug. 1, 1936.) It is possible that he might be a son from a previous marriage of John Bodine or some other relative of John's. On the 1910 census, Sarah Bodine McCann is listed as an 82 year old widow along with Martin R. Bodine's family -- as his mother-in-law. This doesn't make sense to me because I suspected that she might have been his stepmother or maybe his mother. (Maybe they made the mistake because she had remarried and was named McCann instead of Bodine?) On this census, Sarah Bodine McCann is listed as the mother of 5 children with only two living (Martin and Mary?)."

There is a John Bodine in the 1850 Census of Franklin Twp., Lenawee Co., MI who I think might be this John Bodine. Here is the data:
John Bodine, 30, Laborer, NJ
Sally Ann, 25, NJ
Estella, 3, Mich

In that same census, but in Cambridge Township are the following:

Abraham U Bodine, 40, Penn.
Sarah, 22, England
Mary, 1, Mich.

John Bodine, 64, Laborer, NJ
Jane, 56, Penn.
Hirum, 18, Laborer, NJ

John and Jane as well as Abraham and Sarah could be this John's relatives. What's more John and Jane (Clark) Bodine's daughter, Rachel, supposedly married an Isaac N. Stout. I think we probably have a match here.

I later found this John in the 1880 Census of St. Francis, Anoka Co., MN. He is 60 and born in New Jersey. He's a hotel keeper. Both his parents were born in New Jersey, too. His wife and her parents were born in New York. In this same census is a Martin and Julia Bodine. Martin is 27 and born in MI. His parents were also born in MI. Julia is 25 and she and her parents were all born in New Brunswick, Canada. Two children are listed: Mable A. Bodine (3, MN) and Estella (1, MN).
