Notes for: William Girton

Joan Best said that William is in the household of his son, Peter, in the 1850 Census of Greenwood Twp., Columbia Co., PA. He is 70 and born in New Jersey. That would make his birth date about 1780. I have a birth date of April 1778 as of now, but I'm not sure where that came from. Joan wrote, "Peter lived near his parents, apparently, as they are close together in the various censuses, maybe on the same tract of land. In the 1850 census Peter is next to 70 year old William."

I also saw an entry in the Wills and Administrations of Columbia County, PA (Book 2, p. 415) which I abstracted kind of quickly. I was not able to study it much, but it did seem like it applied to this William. I wrote, "Catherine Girton renounced her right of administration of her husband's estate and gave it to John R. Mayer/Moyer." There is another entry for a William Girton on July 17, 1847 in Book 2, p. 431, but I did not see it. The administrator was another William Girton - probably a son.

Joan Best told me that the William Girton who died in 1847 is a different from the William Girton who married Catherine Bodine. According to WorldConnect at Rootsweb, he is the son of John who was our William's older brother. Here is some info on that William:
