Notes for: Cornelius Bodine, Jr.
This Cornelius Bodine, Jr. is first found in the 1840 Census of Barrington in Yates County, New York. There is one male between 20 and under 30 years of age (Cornelius). There is one female under 5 (this would be Eliza J.) and there is one female between 20 and under 30 (that would be Elizabeth, Cornelius' wife). I have a copy of the page on which this census info is found (no. 4).
The 1845 Census has a lot of information about those who were enumerated. There are one male and two females listed in the family. All were born in the state of New York. They owned three cattle, two horses, twenty-two sheep, and four hogs. I believe they owned twenty-five acres of land. If I have the right pages of the census, it seems that there were other children in this family, too. It seems to say that there were a total of five children in the family, but four of them (between the ages of 5 and 16) may have not been his own. I have a copy of the pages this info is on.
The 1850 Census of Barrington lists Cornelius (37), Elizabeth (33), and Eliza J. (12). He is a farmer whose land is valued at $720. All were born in New York. The Census was taken on September 18, 1850.
In the 1855 Census of Barrington in Yates County, Cornelius is 42, Elizabeth is 38, and Eliza J. is 18. All were born in Yates County. They owned a frame house valued at $300. He is a farmer who owns his land. This Census was taken on June 4 (or 9), 1855.
There is an Elizabeth Bodine, age 62, in the 1880 Census of Dundee, Yates Co., NY who I suspect could be this Cornelius's wife. She is a widow. I checked the on-line census at FamilySearch.org, but I think this may be incorrect. It says Elizabeth was born in NJ as well as her parents. The abbreviation for NJ and NJ is often misread on these censuses; so I think it needs checking again. No one else is with Elizabeth in this census. Cornelius must have died by 1880.
From Ronny Bodine:
The 1855 New York State Census reported the birth place of Cornelius and Eliza Bodine as Yates County. However, it was not until 5 Feb 1823 that Yates County was formed entirely from Ontario County. In 1826, the town of Barrington was annexed from Steuben County. Thus, the birth of Cornelius in 1813 and that of his wife several years later actually occured in that portion of Ontario County which was taken to form Yates County.

Cornelius Bodine Died May 12, 1863 Aged 49 Yrs. 10 m. & 29 d. (= 13 June 1813)
The stone for Elizabeth Bodine is broken off near the base, but burial records note she died on 3 June 1903 at the age of 84 years and 11 days which would establish a birth date of 23 May 1819 and which is incompatible with her ages in the censuses.
