Notes for: Vincent Bodine
Audrey Windsor Bodine says that this Vincent Bodine married a Jane ________ and that they had at least four children: John, Vincent, Jr., Mary Ann who married William Van Name at the Port Richmond DRC on Nov. 20, 1836, and Martha who married William Edwards. Audrey said that Vincent was town clerk of Castleton from 1811 until 1825.
This, however, appears to be the Vincent Bodine who married a Sarah Martling. The Britton genealogy says this is probably the son of John Bodine and Catherine Brittain. It says he died at Elizabeth, New Jersey.
In Ira K. Morris's Memorial History of Staten Island, NY (v. 1), he says John married Catherine Britton, the sister of Nathaniel Britton. The following also comes from that book. It is talking about John and Catherine. It is more than a little confusing, but here it is word for word: Their sons were John (usually recognized in local history as "Squire John"), Jacob (the father of William H. J. and Edmund Bodine), the late Captain John, James, Jacob, Albert, and Vincent. There were three daughters, who removed from the Island. James was the father of the late Abraham Bodine, of Mariners' Harbor, and of several sons and daughters now dead.
Note from Dave: I have no idea why this appears to say that John and Catherine had two sons named John and two sons named Jacob. The article makes no mention, it seems, of their sons Nathaniel, Abraham, and Edmund. There could be mistakes in my data here or mistakes in the article.
Chris Leonard said he had a marriage record for a Vincent Bodine, born 1787 on Staten Island to a Sarah Ann Martling in 1812.
While at the Library & Archives of Historic Richmond Town (or Staten Island Historical Society), I found the following obituary for Mrs. Sarah A. Bodine:
Fill this in from the photo I took....
From Ronny Bodine:
1840 Northfield, Richmond Co., NY: Vincent BODINE.
males 1(15-19), 2(20-29), 1(50-59); females 1(20-29), 1(30-39)
His death was reported in the Brooklyn Eagle of 6 Oct 1841 as "Yesterday, Vincent Bodine, 58y" which is substantiated as pertaining to him in that he was not named as a surviving brother of his sister Martha Bodine Edwards who died 17 Feb 1843 and was also not included in a court order of 12 March 1846 which named all of the surviving heirs of his father, but instead named his widow, Sarah, and their two surviving children, sons John and Garrett. Brief mention of his passing was also reported in The New York Evening Post and The New World of 9 Oct 1841.
He was married at St. Andrew's Protestant Episcopal Church, Richmond County to Sarah Ann Martling, daughter of John J. and Dorcas (LaForge) Martling. The will of John J. Martling of 25 March 1852 calls his daughter, Sarah Ann Bodine, a widow (Richmond Co. Wills H: 569). Sarah Bodine was living 1850 with her son John Bodine and his family in the 17th Ward of New York City. In 1860, as Sarah Ann Bodine, age 58, she was head of the household in Brooklyn, Kings County, that included her two sons and her grandchildren and in 1870 was a member of her son John's household in Brooklyn.
