Notes for: Isaac Bodine, Jr.

Bodine's Corners, Michigan is supposedly named after this Isaac Bodine. He was one of the pioneer settlers of the western part of Venango County.

I am guessing that this is the Isaac Bodine buried in the Pine Creek Cemetery in Porter Township, Lycoming Co., PA. I have a birth date of March 15, 1808 for this Isaac. That date (and place) came from the biographical sketch below. However, the date on his probable tombstone is figured to about May 7, 1807 since he died on April 7, 1861 at the age of 53 years and 11 months. That could easily be a mistake, though. The Pine Creek Cemetery is also known as the Davidson Burying Ground.

Most of his kids are described as "of Canal Twp., Venango, PA" in the information at FamilySearch.com.

The following comes from "Biographical Sketches of Lycoming Co., PA (c. LII)."

ISAAC BODINE was born March 15, 1808, near Jersey Shore, son of Isaac and Catherine (Casper) Bodine, who were the parents of nine children: Ann; Sarah; Ellis; Frederick; Margaret; Isaac; Mollie; John T., and Richard. Our subject was educated at Jersey Shore, and followed farming all of his business life. He was married February 1, 1838, to Elizabeth E., daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth (Bailey) Lawshe; to this union were born eight children, six of whom are living: Sarah C., who married Ira E. Reynolds; Lewis L.; Isaac R.; George A.; Ann Elizabeth, who married Andrew G. McMullen, and Harvey H. In May, 1838, Mr. and Mrs. Bodine removed to Michigan. They settled on a farm near Battle Creek, where they remained until 1851, when they went to Canal township, Venango, county, Pennsylvania. There Mr. Bodine died in April 1, 1861. Mrs. Bodine remained on the farm until 1878, when she returned to Jersey Shore. Mr. Bodine was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and his widow is a Presbyterian.

From Ronny Bodine:

The marriage of Isaac Bodine and Elizabeth Lawshe was performed on 1 Feb 1838 by Rev. John Hays Grier in Lycoming County. (Marriages of Rev. John Hays Grier, 1815-1878) In 1850, Isaac Bodine and his family lived in Pennfield, Calhoun County, Michigan engaged in farming. In 1860, Elizabeth Bodine was the head of her household. Her husband Isaac was noted as being "Idiotic." Isaac Bodine was buried in Davidson's Burying Ground, now Pine Creek Cemetery, Lycoming County. In 1870, Elizabeth Bodine, age 52 and widowed, was living with 4 of her children in French Creek Township, Venango County. Elizabeth Bodine was buried in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Jersey Shore, Lycoming County.
