Obituary, Newburgh (NY) Weekly Telegraph of Wed., 24 Dec 1873.
Again has death come into our community as suddenly and unexpectedly as a thief in the night. On Saturday morning last, Mrs. Mary Sears, wife of Samuel Sears, whose residence is about two miles from this village, arose and went about her accustomed duties about her house. She soon felt some distress and made use of some simple remedies. Her two daughters were sent for, and on their arrival she went to her bed and lay down, saying that she felt better. She soon fell into what the daughters thought a quiet sleep, but alas! it was that long sleep that will only be awakened by the sound of the archangel's trumpet at the morning of the resurrection. Mrs. Sears was born in the town of Montgomery, near Walden, Aug. 21st, 1802, consequently at the time of her death she was in her 72nd year. She was the daughter of Lewis Bodine, one of the early settlers of this part of the country. In the year 1821, Sept. 20th, she was married to Samuel Sears. The fruits of this marriage were nine children--seven sons and two daughters-- three of whom preceded their mother to the tomb, viz: Lewis, Milton and Robert; the others with their father still linger on the shore of time to mourn the loss of the loved ones. Mrs. Sears was truly a remarkable woman,---kind and courteous to all, with a disposition as mild as the halo of an Indian summer's day. Her death was a fitting close to the life she had lived; quiet in life, attending to every duty--in death serene and happy. She passed away with a smile still resting on her countenance:--truly her's was only a sleep--a rest from toil and care. Her funeral was attended on Tuesday, the 16th inst., by a large circle of friends and mourners, who had gathered to pay their last respects to a beloved friend.---Montgomery Standard.
