Obituary, Middletown Times-Press (Middletown, N.Y.) of 6 Feb 1906.
Townsend Dusenberry Tuthill, Goshen's eldest businessman, died suddenly Monday night of heart disease, aged 75 years, 2 months and 16 days. Mr. Tuthill's death was due to the excitement attending the fire which partially destroyed Sayer's Lumber yard, mention of which is made by our Goshen correspondent. Mr. Tuthill had been afflicted with heart trouble for some time, and his physician had informed him that any unusual excitement was apt to prove fatal to him. When the alarm of fire was sounded, Monday night, Mr. Tuthill on arriving there. complained of feeling bad. He sat down on the steps of Fancher Bros.' store nearby, and was later induced to go to his own place of business and rest for a time. On reaching the store, Mr. Tuthill became so much worse that his son-in-law went to the St. Elmo Hotel and summoned Dr. Condice, and when he returned Mr. Tuthill was breathing his last and expired in a few moments. Deceased was born on the Tuthill homestead farm, in the town of Hamptonburgh, and was a son of Horace S. and Mary Martha Dusenberry Tuthill. At the age of sixteen years he began his apprenticeship as a tinsmith, and a year and a half later came to Middletown and completed his trade. He remained in Middletown until 1851, when he located to Goshen, and two years later erected a brick block on West main street, now occupied by Decker's pharmacy. Later he engaged in the hardware business for three years. In 1865 Mr. Tuthill entered the employ of Wallace & Strong, as foreman, and five years later he again engaged in business for himself at 71 West Main street, where he had just completed the erection of a fine business block. November 29, 1853, Mr. Tuthill was married to Miss Mary S. Bodine of Pine Bush. She died at Goshen eight years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mary A. and Annabel, wife of Charles H. Hulse, and one son, Charles W. Tuthill, all of Goshen. In politics Mr. Tuthill was a Democrat. For fifteen years he was superintendent of the Goshen water works. He was also treasurer of the village excise board and had served a term as village tax collector. The funeral will be held from his late home on West street, Thursday, at 1:30 o'clock. Interment in Slate Hill Cemetery.
