Funeral services for Warren County Clerk John M. Bodine, 58, of Washington R. D. were held Tuesday morning in First Presbyterian Church, Washington. Mr. Bodine died Saturday morning, August 25, 1962, at Warren Hospital where he had been a patient two weeks. He had been county clerk for more than 10 years and was elected to his third five-year term last November. A popular office-holder, his vote was the largest turned in by any county candidate in that election. He also was Warren County Civil Defense and Disaster Control coordinator, a post to which he was appointed in 1954. He had worked hard to expand and improve the Civil Defense setup at the county level and in the county's 23 municipalities. A native of Pleasant Valley, near Washington, he was the son of the late Enos Bodine and Mrs. Irene Kries Bodine of Washington, R. D. 1. He was graduated from Washington High School in 1920 and attended Rider College, Montclair State College and Rutgers University. He was a vocational teacher and an athletic coach at Washington High School for two years and worked at the Edison Cement plant New Village for 17 years. He also served as sports official for many years. He operated his own insurance business from his home. After unsuccessful bids for election as Warren County sheriff in 1947 and 1960, Mr. Bodine. a Republican, was appointed by former Governor Alfred Driscoll as county clerk in March 1951 to fill the unexpired term of Ramsey Reese, who died in office. He was elected to a full five-year term the following fall and was re-elected in 1956 and 1961. Each time, he proved himself one of the strongest vote-getters in the county. Active in Boy Scout work for many years. Mr. Bodine held the Silver Beaver award, presented to him in 1945 for distinguished service to Scouting. Also active in Washington Chapter work of the American Red Cross, he was for a time first aid chairman and instructor. For many years he was a member and served as president of the North West Jersey Umpires Association and was a member of the North Jersey Football Officials Association. Mr. Bodine was a patient at Warren Hospital in the spring of 1961 and subsequently underwent chest surgery at Mount Kip Sanitorium, Glen Gardner. He was admitted to Warren Hospital August 10 for observation and treatment of an internal disorder. Surviving in addition to his mother are his widow, the former Edith Yawger a son, Willard F., of Washington; a sister, Mrs. Clara Fitts of Washington Township, and two grandchildren.
In June 1968 in Washington, Warren County, New Jersey, Edith (Yawger) Bodine married Herbert L. Black.

WASHINGTON - Mrs. Edith B. Bodine, 68, of 4673 Felton St., San Diego, Calif., formerly of Washington R.D. 1, and widow of the late John M. Bodine, former Warren County Clerk, died Wednesday in the Hillside Hospital, Diego, Calif. Born in Schooleys Mountain, she was a daughter of the late Frederick C. and Jenny Petty Yawger. She was a member of the Washington Chapter 136, Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include a son, Willard F. Bodine, Washington R.D. 1; a sister, Mrs. Blanch Shaw, Rahway; and two grandchildren. Services were held Monday in the DeVoe Funeral Home, Washington. Interment was in Washington Cemetery.
