Notes for: Charles Vantine

The following information came from Carol Van Tine Yocom's website at Rootsweb's WorldConnect:

According to grandson Albert's biography, his grandfather (Charles) fought in Revolutionary War. A Charles Vantine was an ensign in York County, Pennsylvania, but there was nothing to indicate which Charles it was. Revolutionary Marker on grave according to Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, V. 4, s-z, by Hatcher. Charles Van Tine, Parsell Cemetery, Owasco, Cayuga Co, NY. Referenced to Congressional Serial Set 1941, 10572, V. 12.

According to great-grandson James's biography, his father Albert was the son of Mathew (Matheus) who fought in Revolutionary War and Albert was in the War in 1812 but not in Indexes.

After looking though my notes on the Bodines, I am still not satisfied that Charles Vantine who married Elizabeth Smock and the Charles Vantine who married Ann- VanNuis are in fact the same person. I have conflicting sources. Did you find a will for the Charles that died in Peru Ohio? I am going to look at the Charles who died in Cayuga County 1806 tomorrow.

I also see that the Devoes and Bodines have been marrying each other since colonial times. I found a reference in the NYGBR 1977 regarding de Veaux marriages. An interesting note if you may.

As for the conflicting sources, I see yours and also a compilation by Linda Hole in the Cayuga County Historian's Office. I do not have the funds or means to travel and research, so I am going with what I can find online and in various history books.

I know we've had this discussion before, but I am still confused.

Hello, it's Jessica Armstrong. I sent you stuff on the Bodine's a few years back.
Well, a gentleman hired the office to look into James VanTine and Charity Lewis. A family worksheet he was given has that the father is Jacob VanTine and Alida Post.
However.
I believe the father is Charles VanTine, the one that died between November 1807 and January 1808 based on location and names found in the probate file.
I am still looking into Jacob. There is a Jacob who's wife was Alli in a deed, but the purchase was in Auburn (sold in 1812), and there is another Jacob purchasing in Brutus, but when he sold it in 1815, no wife was listed and he was living in Clarence, (Niagara Co.), NY (where Mathias ended up).
I think there is some confusion as to the many Charles'es. Carol Yocum or Linda Hole has information that is not matching up with what I am finding in the deeds based on dates and locations of people when the deeds happened. I will send you a copy of what I have found when I have it completed in a couple of days.

But the main thing: The Charles that died in 1806 is not the one that wrote a will in 1807-a binder we have in the Cayuga County Historian's Office has some information from your website in it as well as what was compiled by Linda Hole using your site and Carol Yocum's notes-it suggests that the one that died in 1806 was writing a will in 1807…

Charles VanTine, of Sempronius. Will written November 8, 1807. Wife Mary, children Thomas, Sukey, Ann, Jinney, and James. Probated January 9, 1808. Cornelius Bodine, Isaac Ammerman, and Thomas Johnson, Sr., executors. No real estate mentioned, only personal estate. A mare, saddle, and bridle for Thomas. Rest to wife, divided amongst the rest of the children upon Mary's death or remarriage.
