Notes for: Gilbert Bertie Bodine, Sr.
LDS listed a Gilbert B. Bodine who married a Sarah Ann Hall on October 9, 1890 in Long Valley, Morris County, New Jersey. This could be him.
A Joseph Hall Bodine was born on September 19, 1894 in Lake Hopatcong, Morris Co., NJ to Gilbert and Sarah Annie Hall Bodine (IGI).
IGI says this Gilbert was the son of Gilbert Bodine and Sarah Ann Miller. He is listed as their son in the cemetery where his parents are buried. This Gilbert was listed in the 1870 Census (Morris Co., NJ) with his parents. This Gilbert is not listed in the 1880 Census in his father's house (Chester, Morris Co., NJ). Instead, a Bestus (sp?) B. Bodine (age 13, NJ) is listed. Is that some other name for Gilbert? They may both have the same initial B; so that could be a hint this is the same person. However, Sarah (Miller) Bodine is listed as having had 9 children in the 1900 Census of Chester, Morris Co., NJ. Only 5 were still living in 1900.
The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography (v. 46, p. 268) has an article about and a picture of Dr. Joseph Hall Bodine. His father was a railroad engineer. Joseph was a famous zoologist. He received his public education in Rockaway, NJ and graduated with a Ph.D. in 1920 from the University of Pennsylvania. He later became professor and head of the department of zoology at the university of Iowa. He held this position there until near the end of his life. He wrote many articles on cellular physiology and belonged to numerous societies. He became a captain during WWI, serving in France. In relgion he was a Congregationalist and in politics a Republican.
He first married Sarah Olivia Heimach, daughter of George M. Heimach of Philadelphia, on Nov. 19, 1919 in Philadelphia. She died in 1950. He then married Eunice (Willis) Beardsley, daughter of Elbert E. Willis of Colorado, a rancher, on June 9, 1951 in Elmhurst, IL. Eunice was the widow of Alfred Stave Beardsley. He died on July 23, 1954 in Iowa City, Iowa. He had one son by his first marriage, Joseph Hall Bodine, Jr.
From Ronny Bodine:
In 1900, Gilbert Bodine lived in Phillipsburg, Warren County employed as a locomotive engineer. He reported he and Sarah had been married 10 years during which time she had borne 2 children, both living with them. In 1920, Gilbert Bodine lived in Rockaway, Morris County engaged as a steam railroad engineer. Gilbert and Sarah Bodine are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Chester, Morris County.
