Notes for: Joseph M. Bodine, Sr.
Joseph is 22 in the 1870 Census of Philadephia and living with his parents, probably at their hotel.
Pamela Bodine (Compton) Ware said they pronounced the name BOWdeen. Pam is the granddaughter of Lydia (Bodine) Compton.
From Ronny Bodine:
Joseph was aged 2 in 1850 and 12 in 1860 which better matches with the 1900 census of Feb 1848, as opposed to his computed age at his death in 1901 which gave him a birth date of 3 Feb 1853.
In 1870, Joseph Bodine was living with his parents in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania working as a restaurant keeper, probably in the hotel operated by his parents. From Oct 1873 to 2 Sept 1875 he served as a Private with Company C, 1st Regiment of the Pennsylvania National Guard. In 1880, he was enumerated twice. On 1 June he was working as a waiter in his father's hotel and on 9 June he was counted again, but this time with his family. His occupation was noted as "Tends eating bar."
