Notes for: Emma (Emily) Augusta Bodine
From Ronny Bodine:
The marriage of Hercules Atkin, 35, merchant from Philadelphia to Emma A. Bodine, 28, was recorded in the records of the Williamstown Methodist Episcopal Church. The Atkin family was living 1880 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Hercules operated a carpet store. The 1890 Philadelphia city directory records his ownership of Hercules Atkin & Co. involved in carpet sales. In 1900, Hercules Atkins and his family were living in Philadelphia and still engaged in the carpet business. Emma stated she had borne 4 children, all then living. The death of Hercules Atkin was reported in many newspapers including the Williamsport (Pa.) "Daily Gazette and Bulletin" and the Washington (D.C.) "Post" of 23 June 1906. See a biography of Hercules Atkin in "Philadelphia, a history of the city and its people," by Ellis Paxson Oberholtzer (Philadelphia, 1912), IV: 477-478. Emma Atkin, now widowed, was living in Philadelphia in 1910 with 3 of her children. In 1920, she was living with her son Hercules, in Jenkintown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
