Notes for: Cornelius Bodine

I had some records for a Cornelius and Phylinda Bodine who appear to be this Cornelius Bodine. That's what I am guessing anyway. It is not definite, but it seems highly likely. More evidence is needed to be sure, though. They are found in the 1880 Census of Ovid, Seneca Co., NY. Cornelius is 58 and born in NY. He is an ex-sheriff. His father was born in PA and his mother in NY. Phylinda is 56 and born in NY. She is disabled. The only child noted is son Guy Bodine, his wife, and daughter.

A couple of LDS records said he was "of Ovid, Seneca Co., NY." One listed his mother as Harriet Swarthout.

Some more info on this family also comes from the LDS web site. Cornelius is probably a son of Lewis Bodine (BK#15563) or a grandson of Issac (BK#15150).

Obituary, The Ovid Independent of Tuesday, 15 March 1887.
Death has again entered our community, and taken from our midst one of our most worthy and esteemed citizens and filled the hearts of the people of this community with the keenest sorrow. Mr. Cornelius Bodine died last Thursday at 4 o'clock p. at., after painful illness of many months, and it is unreasonable to suppose that he had made preparations for that event. He was one of that class of people who believed in "peace if possible, but justice at any rate;" and doing unto others as he would have them do unto him. That principle gave him the most tender love and sincere attachment to his beloved wife during eight years of her life that she was an invalid, as the people of Ovid, where they then lived, will remember; and the sweetest patience which then characterized all he said or did to lighten the burden and sweeten her life during her long years of suffering, which closed Jan. 27, 1882. He was a man universally known and highly respected in this county, and had been called to various positions of trust. He filled the office of sheriff one term and under sheriff two terms of three years each from 1870, showing in every respect a useful member of society, an upright citizen, and a generous and steadfast friend. Mr. Bodine was born in Romulus Dec 30, 1820. He was the oldest son of the late Gilbert Bodine, one of the pioneers of this county. He was married to Philinda Stone, daughter of the late John Stone, of Romulus, in 1841, and leaves one son, Guy S., who occupies the homestead, and has cared for him during his sickness, and two daughters, Mrs. John Osgood, of Ovid, and Mrs. Charles Hicks, of Penn Yan. Rev. Lewis Halsey, of Farmer Village, who conducted the funeral services, gave a most impressive sermon. At the grave in Highland Evergreen cemetery at Ovid, the last sad rites were paid to one who had lived an honest, upright life; and the sympathy of the community is tendered to the grieved family in the hour of their sorrow.
