Notes for: John Bodine

FamilySearch had a Johanna as a daughter of John Bodine, but there is no Johanna listed in John's will. I think "Johanna" may have been mistaken for "John." FamilySearch listed a birth date of about 1815 in Ovid, Seneca Co., NY. I'm not sure where that date came from.

John is not mentioned in his brother Ralph's will of Feb. 4, 1870. He must have been dead by then. In fact, this John appears to be buried in the Wayne Baptist Cemetery in Tyrone, NY; however, I don't think the transcription of his tombstone is correct. It says he died on Aug. 11, 1857 at age 21. It would make more sense if the death year was 1837. I would guess it says 1837 or 1847, not 1857. This would make his birth year be about 1816 or 1826. Based on the 1820 Census info for this John's father, I would guess that this John was born later, maybe 1826. I say that because only one male under 10 was listed in that 1820 census and I believe that was Charles.

This family is discussed in Edson Payson Bodine's article "The History of the Branch of the Bodine Family Founded by Cornelius Bodine, A Soldier of the Revolution, and a Pioneer of the Lake Country of Central New York" (1897). It is not a well-documented article, but the later genealogies are probably pretty accurate. His earlier genealogies may have more mistakes. He does not list any family for this John Bodine.

From Ronny Bodine:

In June 1850, John Bodine was aged 15 years.

Burials in Wayne Village Cemetery (aka Wayne Baptist Cemetery), Tyrone, Schuyler County
