Notes for: Thomas Edward Bodine

His middle name comes from his daughter Charlotte's Michigan death record.

As far as his wife and children, I am guessing that the Thomas and Susan Bodine in the 1880 Census of Burlington County refers to this family. One of this Thomas' sisters was named Charlotte and one of this brothers was named Stockton, the same names as found among his children. This Thomas' birth year would also match his age given in the 1880 Census.

Based on Bob Ford's message below, it seems correct to assume that the Susan __________ whom Thomas Bodine married was actually Susan Ann Ford, daughter of John H. Ford. This would need more proof, but I think this is correct. Here is the message:

Hi Dave,

Just found your info on Thomas E. Bodine at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bodine/f1833.htm

Hightstown [NJ] Gazette, 17 Dec 1858: On Tuesday, Dec 14th, by Rev. L. Smith, Mr. Thomas B [E] Bodine, of Bordentown, N.J., to Miss Susan, daughter of Mr. John Ford, of this place.

Hightstown [NJ] Gazette, 24 Apr 1862: "Thomas E. Bodine, Painter, Shop over J.H. Ford's Blacksmith shop, Hightstown, NJ ..."

In the 1860 census Thomas (who was 22 and a painter) and Susan were living in Hightstown next to John H. FORD and his 2nd wife Lydia.

My great grandfather, Wm. H. Ford, had among others, a brother John H. Ford (b. about 1819, d. 07 Jan 1895 in Hightstown). He was a blacksmith and was also on the Hightstown City Council for a spell. John's 1st wife was Margaret H. Hammell (b. about 1823, d. 19 Jun 1850). They had two children: John Edward Ford and Susan Ann Ford (b. about 1841, d. after 1894). Wm. H. & John H.'s parents were Gilman and Gertrude (Hutchinson) Ford who (along with others in the family including Wm. H.) moved from Mercer Co., NJ to Jersey Co., IL in 1851.

My Ford's in the Mercer & surrounding counties area go back to the early 1700's.

Bob Ford

According to the following obituary, found at DistantCousin.com, Thomas and Susan had more children than I have accounted for them. There should be at least nine.

Abraham Bodine of River street died on Tuesday of consumption, aged 38 years. He had been sick about three weeks but had been confined to his bed only two days. Mr. Bodine was the son of Thomas Bodine of Bordentown, He was a painter by trade. He leaves a widow and a daughter, Reba, aged ten years. Mr. Bodine leaves also three brothers and five sisters, who live at Bordentown and Philadelphia. The funeral will be held at his late home at one o'clock on Friday. The sermon will be preached by Elder Willis G. Brown, pastor of the Eatontown advent church, assisted by Elder Eseck Wolcott. The body will be buried in Greenwood cemetery at West Long Branch.

Dave,

I have just acquired Thomas E. Bodine's painters tool box. It was purchased at a Massachusetts antiques auction in 2005. A personal friend bought it and eventually sold it to me. He never look through the box. I did. There are two places where it is signed by Thomas. That alone would not have given me the information I needed to be sure it was the Thomas Bodine of Bordentown, NJ. There is a glass bottle with Bordentown written on it and a piece of glassine envelope wrapped around a sample number plate. The two cancellations are Philadelphia, August 4, 1907 and Bordentown, NJ. I Googled Thomas E. Bodine and up came the information that he was a painter, when he was born and when he died. I feel certain this is his box. Now I am interested in finding out more about him. Hopefully I can find examples of his work in the Bordentown area, a photo of him and where he lived in Bordentown etc. There may be family members and relatives who I could be directed to who could help me get to know Thomas and his work since he painted, did graining and gilding for his entire life. I can send you photos of his tool box if you wish. It is filled with his graining and gilding tools and brushes. I believe the box is from the 19th century. A wonderful find.
