Notes for: William Bodine
I have some doubts William Bodine having two wives but can't prove anything, At this point, he does appear to be William Bodine with a second wife found in the 1880 Census of Camden, Camden Co., NJ. He is the sexton of a church, age 66, and born in NJ. Both his parents were born in NJ as well. His wife is Mary A. Bodine. She was 47 and born in NJ (her parents, too). Children are Sarah A. (18, NJ, NJ, NJ) and Mary E. (7, NJ, NJ, NJ). Just speculation here, but I wonder if he didn't leave his first wife and nobody knew where he went. Something is a little off here.
I found Mary A. Bodine (age 33, NJ) with daughter Rosellia Bodine (age 7, NJ) in the 1850 Census in the home of William and Mary Ollis in Camden, NJ. There is a Hoover family there, too. Maybe it is a boarding house or something.
I don't know where these two are in the 1860 Census. They are not with the Snowdens.
Rosalie Bodine (age 27, NY) is a servant in the house of her Snowden cousins in the 1870 Census of Winslow, Camden Co., NJ.
When her brother-in-law Daniel Bodine calls her his widowed sister-in-law in the 1880 Census, you wonder if William didn't die before the 1850 Census or if they are just covering for him.
From Ronny Bodine (Aug. 11, 2020):
1st marriage--1841--MARY ANN EVANS.
From Gloucester County, New Jersey Marriage Records:
William Bodine of Longacoming AND Miss Mary Ann Evans of Spring Garden, Gloucester County, were married 23 Dec 1841 by Joseph G. Shinn, Esq. [Note: Longacoming is in Camden County.]
Mary Elizabeth Sinnott in her 1905 "Annals..." identifies only one wife, Mary Ann Evans, for William Bodine whom he married in 1841. However, it is clear from the censuses of 1860 to 1880 that he had a second wife, also named Mary Ann, who was at least 15 years younger. William and Mary Ann Bodine clearly divorced as William remarried in 1858, was living with his 2nd wife in 1860 to 1880 while his 1st wife was living in 1880 with his brother Daniel Bodine and is there called Daniel's sister-in-law.
1880 Camden, Camden Co., NJ: Daniel BODINE 54 NJ, Elizabeth 50 NJ wife, Mary A. Bodine 62 NY widowed sister-in-law.
1900 Hammonton, Atlantic Co., NJ: Mary A. BODINE July 1817 NJ widow, Rosalie M. Dec 1842 NJ dau single music teacher. Mary bore 1 child.
