Notes for: Mary Ann Bodine

Mary's birth date calculated from her age at death should be June 25, 1799, but her baptism date was October 18, 1798. It would seem there is a mistake somewhere, but I'll leave her birth date as June 25, 1798 for now. I would like to doublecheck this baptism date in Tobias Wright's book to make sure it is correct.

She is mentioned in her father's will. She may be the Mary Ann Martling who was an executrix of the estate of a Vincent Bodine of Castleton, Staten Island (Book 3, p. 167) dated April 18, 1836. It involved a dwelling and lot at Castleton known as Bodine's Tavern, about five acres. Janet Britton wrote, "I feel confident that Mary Ann Bodine Britton was never a Martling. The person referred to may be Mary Ann Britton Martling, w/o Peter, d/o Abraham Britton and Magdalana De Hart. She lived ca 1814-1861. I cannot determine which Vincent Bodine this is."

Janet said that Mary Ann definitely died in 1861. She also has a note that Mary was baptized October 18, 1798 in the Dutch church, and that she was born June 25, 1798. Here is some more info from Janet:

Mary resided in 1850 in Castleton, Staten Island, Richmond, NY:

Oliver, 4.

She signed a will on Jun 10 1861 in Staten Island, Richmond, NY (Will/Probate Record/Letters of Administration. Proved 11/25/1861).

She died on Oct 18 1861 in Castleton, Staten Island, Richmond, NY. This comes from Vosburgh's Inscriptions, Staten Island Cemetery, (p. 1069?): Mary Ann, Relict of Nathaniel Briton, Junior who died October 18, 1861; age 62 years, 3 months & 23 days; buried SI Cem., lot 129, Mary A. Britton Plot.

She has gone to rest with her Saviour
BRITTON, Mary Ann, 62y 3m 23d
d. 1861-10/18

From the New York Herald of 10/19/1861: Deaths: Britton, Mary Ann Mrs.

Her death was not found in Manhattan records on this date, although I suspect she died in Staten Island. She was buried in SI Cemetery, SI, Richmond, NY.103

She was married to Nathaniel (Nathan) Britton, Jr. (son of Nathaniel Britton, Sr. and Elsey Van Buskirk) on October 24, 1815 in St. Andrew's Church, Staten Island, Richmond, NY. Nathaniel (Nathan) Britton, Jr. was born in 1793. He was buried in 1841 in St. Andrew's Church, Staten Island, Richmond, NY.105 whoops! this is wrong. who is this nathaniel buried in st. andrews????? He died on Feb 13 1841 in Castleton, Staten Island, Richmond, NY. Vosburgh's Inscriptions (p. 1068?) say that Nathaniel Briton, Jr. died on February 13, 1841, in the 49th year of his age. (BRITTON, Nathaniel, Jr., 49y, d. 1841-02/13, bur. SI Cem. Lot 129 Mary A Britton Plot).

This may be him:
1835 Census, Castleton: Nathaniel Britton, 4 males, 7 females, 1 voting male, 1 married female under 45, 1 unmarried female 16-45, 5 unmarried females under 16, 1 female married within past year, 1 female birth within past year, 9 cattle, 4 horses, 5 hogs.

If that's correct, then who is this?
1835 Census, Northfield, p. 8: Nathan Briton, 4 males, 4 females, 1 voting male, 1 married female under 45, 1 unmarried female 16 - 45, 1 female under 16, 1 acre, 1 cow, 3 hogs.

Clute says of him: "He owned and resided on the property on the east side of Broadway, West New Brighton, extending the whole length of that highway."

He may be the one who served in the War of 1812. Have ordered military records from NYS.

End of message from Janet.

Janet Britton (janetb@bigfoot.com) sent me the information below on their children.
